Applied for 2017/18 school year, any tips from y'all for a black man going to school in the next 4 years?
Thanks, Godspeed Breh. What college do you go to?No pressure
- Remember you're black
- Remember you ain't white
- That said, despite what The Coli likes to say, there's nothing wrong with making connections with other ethnicities. A lot of times black people just aren't going to have the sort of networks that their white/asian/hispanic coutnerparts are going to have. That's just the reality we live in.
- If you have black professors get in good with them because you never know the opportunities that might pop up
- Attend office hours, especially if you're at a huge university with large class sizes. Getting face time with a professor, even if it's just to shoot the shyt, can be beneficial
- Make use of your resources; library, student center, clubs and organizations, etc.
- If it's a commuter school get involved. Think about it this way, there's thousands of other people at schoo just going through the motions. Do you really want to be like them? Or would you rather stand out?
- Another thing for commuter schools, don't be afraid to show up a few hours before you have to go to class if it's later in the day. Parking can be a bytch and you don't need that stressing you out. Plus it'll give you time to relax and get some work done, or procrasinate if you're in that sort of mood.
- If your school has some sort of priority registration system, do what you gotta do to be a part of it. The worst thing is when your classes fill up before your registration appointment, and that's a big possibility for a 1st year.
- Don't be one of those people who fusses over 8AM classes. The real world starts functioning between 7-9AM and if you can't wake up to go to class on a regular basis, you're going to dread being an actual employee.
- Partying isn't all its cracked up to be . Getting turnt every weekend is the fast track to messing your life up. We're black, we don't get to make mistakes.
- Personally, I think it's better to have some gaps between your classes rather than stacking them all on top of each other. I know situations are different, but sometimes that can mean several midterms on the same day as well as several finals on the same day. If you can spread it throughout the week then great, if not then try to leave an hour between classes if you have 3+ on the same day. My school runs classes in essentially an hour and 50 minute blocks with 10 minutes between them. If you walk slow and/or have class on the other side of campus, that's your ass . And some professors use each and every minute rather than giving breaks or letting you out early. Plan accordingly.
- Make friends in your major classes, but also make them in GE classes. I have friends spread across all of our colleges.
- You're an adult now so nobody is going to hold your hand. When shyt gets real, it gets real, so keep that in mind.
- Have fun and make the best of it . You might not finish in 4 years and don't let that get you down. It'll allow you more time to mature and trust me, a year makes a big difference in how you think about things.
- C's get degrees If you can't get the A go for the B. If you can't get the B go for the C. If it's not a prerequisite for another class, don't trip if you end up with a D-/+, so long as it's passing. I'm not saying let your grades slip, but don't put undue stress on yourself. Other than internships or entry-level college program positions, nobody is concerend about your GPA. If you're going to grad school then maybe try a bit harder.
I go to a Cal State in the Greater LA area. I'm in fairly close proximity to UCR, UCLA, UCI. It's a commuter school but I've kind of done it all; lived on campus my first couple of years, I've lived near the campus in a rental house with friends a couple of times, and now I'm commuting. Because of all that I encourage people to be a part of a club or something, preferably one that is in other schools too. I was a part of one of the Asian student groups and because of that I've been practically all over SoCal. I even got nominated for president .Thanks, Godspeed Breh. What college do you go to?

What a big ass contradiction breh1. Partying on the weekend should be a reward for all the hard work you did during the week. Never forget this.
2. These 4 years will FLY by, even faster than high school.
3. These 4 years will also probably be the most important factor in how the rest of your entire life will play out. Be fukking serious. That doesn't mean don't have fun. College is a time for fun/exploration etc as well. But please, BE fukkING SERIOUS. Think about what I said because it's the truth. These 4 years will very well determine the entire trajectory o the rest of your life, not to mention that of your family and others around you. People that fukk around end up in dead end jobs with high debt. People that don't fukk around end up with careers that will be both personally and financially fulfilling. It will be the difference between constant anxiety about things like rent vs the excitement of searching for a place to live and raise a family.
Everything else will probably be covered (go to office hours, study something you actually enjoy, don't ruin your credit), but overall my message is to give this time in your life the time, patience and hard work that it requires.
Also, and I'm not here to necessarily promote this but I want to tell you because it's something that many of your fellow white/asian students will be doing - but if you find yourself having difficulty with procrastination and overall lack of focus, consider a prescription for adderal.
I think you should read it as you should be partying on the weekend, not throughout the week, and only after you've done enough work to warrant it. If you didn't put the work in, you don't get to party .What a big ass contradiction breh
The weekend is for hitting them fukking books
