You'll be tight on budget in California with only $1,000 per month. If you rent a room rather than trying to find a place to yourself that'll ease it up; I've paid between $310 and $400 for a room with some friends, but we did our rent calculations a little differently. On the other side of that, I have other friends paying upwards of $500 for the room alone. Throw in utilities and food (depending on how much you eat) and you'll go through that $1,000 in no time at all. If you can budget a bit more then you'll be fine, if not then maybe look at Kansas.
. In the end though I played myself - I thought I met the prereq when I didn't. But it all worked out since I had my backup class set to go through at the same time
