I'm doing some research on Jamaican afrodiaspric religions which is why I right up the ifá question

Both Jamaica and Suriname have large Akan influence

My father is from Jamaica and my grandfather is from Suriname so I'm willing to bet I have some Akan in me :ehh:

:mjcry:Breh I'm so confused. I thought ifá predates these religions /spiritualities

All of these systems predates orthodox religions.

Well do you mean IFA as a divination Dip? or do you mean as a religion? I would argue that they have different religions but similarities however IFA is from the Yoruba people.

The deities and practices of other groups are different and should not be mixed unless you know what your doing I hear.
I thought ifá was divination not a religion

Damn, what are the odds of that. I had no ideal you had fam from Suriname lol. I guess winti is more so their root and what they come out of particularly in suriname.

In Jamica do they practice any form of orisha worship? I know in Trinidad you have Shango Baptist or just Shango which are very christian compared to the Santeria of Cuba but they deal with orisha worship.

It is the name of the divination system but also the name of the religion. Just like in trinidad Shango is the name of their orisha worship but shango is also an orisha. In Suriname Winti is the name of their tradition but also part of the name of the different pantheons of deities which act as different groups of deities.

I have roots all over the Caribbean

Majority of the afrodiasporic religions have Yoruba roots with notable exceptions in the Anglophone Caribbean (notable exception to that is Trinidad which has a unique history)

I haven't found much influence from the Yoruba in Jamaica culture in general . The African people's with most influence are the Akan, Igbo and Kongo from what I understand

However in the Caribbean and the US I find it interesting that the places with more Catholic influence seemingly retained more African spiritual system

Oh I see.

Also yeah it's interesting but it makes sense. With the saints as part of Catholicism and what not they were easily able to use that religion to hide their deities. In Christianity all you have is Jesus and while you do have many more characters in the bible worshiping them is not a thing like worshiping the saints in Catholicism. That's why some people even look at Catholicism as borderline paganism.

On another note, I just came across this and although wiki is not the most reliable this may give you some things to look into

List of Jamaican Patois words of African origin - Wikipedia

Interesting, looks similar to IFA but it looks like they use 2 chains(lol) and they also use binary much like IFA.

Akan culture is by far the biggest influence on Afro Jamaican culture

Most of our African loanwiatds are from Twi
I was watching sakawa boys on vicekand and Ghana reminds me a lot of Jamaica . I want to make s thread about it soon
