just give it a couple of years, the way the game is going even the traditionalists are going to be in favor of the DH soon. Baseball is a dying sport... it's gonna be a long gradual death, but they are dying. they need to do something like this to ramp up interest again.

how about this compromise- no DH, but only 8 spots in the lineup ? :leon:

I hate DH purely for the fact you can be a 50-year old dude who cant move a lick but can still hit homeruns on some golf swing shyt.

you have to be fielding if you wanna hit.

also, having DH favors offensive teams and bad defense over good defense and pitching :childplease:

cant get with that bullshyt. defense should be AT LEAST as important as offense in any sport.

exactly. further proof it should be abolished. if youre saying thats proof it has moved on I disagree. the reason imo it hasnt is cause of the old baseball writers and they dont care about minor leagues or japanese leagues or whatever. Theyre holding onto to that NL pitcher hitting and when you ask most theyd rather take the DH away from the AL. Shiiit they wont even vote a DH as MVP or vote into the Hall of fame. (thought hat will change cause theyre on David Ortiz dikk)

Show me proof baseball is dying. 'Cause all I see is attendance going up, exciting pennant races and the fact that the single most exciting day of baseball happened last year.

jfkennedy I understand your take but as Conz pointed out, the pitchers are such an investment now, there is no way teams would ever let them focus on hitting and possibly take away from their pitching, Back int he day that wasnt a concern. Plus most teams WOULD spend 5 mill on a DH to protect their 100 mill investment in a pitcher they just signed.

National League teams spend on average something like $88 million, American League teams $97 million. NL teams may be less likely to pay 'everyday money' to a player, when they can instead pay a bench player.

And I just looked it up, the top 5 paid DH's were all making over $13 million. (2012 MLB Designated Hitter Salaries - USATODAY.com) Which is absurd for a player who doesn't even play defense.

As much as a pitcher can get hurt hitting (like AJ Burnett did this year), the actual act of pitching is even more dangerous. So protecting your investment is moot. Bob Gibson broke his leg on a line-drive. Mike Mussina got hit in the face with a line-drive. Freak accidents happen. It's no sense in using that argument because a pitcher getting hurt hitting is a rare occurence.

People just don't like seeing pitchers hit, lol. But it can be exciting, like when Joe Blanton hit a homerun in the World Series.

My only argument for the DH in the National League would be that it would even the scales when it comes to signing top-notch players. Someone like Pujols would be more inclined to stay in St. Louis (excluding the major money the Angels offered him) if he knew he could be protected in his last few years by foregoing the field and just hitting.

sure they could get hurt either way but why double the risk?

Because it's barely even a risk. It's not double the risk. It's muuuuch less than that. Go tell me how many pitchers have been hurt while hitting.

man players nowadays are babysat too much. I know its business and money but...nothing is too scary about pitchers hitting. the good hitting pitchers take pride in their ability.
