The OG Prom Night is a slasher movie classic and it features what I consider to be the hands down best horror movie chase scene ever:

I started watching it yesterday..couldn't make it. I say they're both equally meh
I'm not opposed to horror remakes as long as you can find something interesting to do or say or just make something fun in the spirit of the original. The Friday the 13th remake works for me because it's a lot of fun and is no worse than any other film in the series
The halloween remake, while adding new ideas, adds unneeded ideas that take away from the main character. I don't need to know Michael's backstory. He's the boogeyman, leave it at that. The minute you try to draw depth out of Michael, you make him sympathetic and since he's the embodiment of evil, why in the hell would he ever be sympathetic?
The Thing prequel COULD'VE been interesting had they not made it a CGI fest and came up with rules that violate the movie they were leading into.
On the other hand, The Thing remake is a very good example of how to do it: You take the core idea and extrapolate and make it salient for your current audience. Carpenter took that idea of an alien attacking an outpost and turned it into an allegory on AIDS which is really cool. He ramped up the paranoia also.
The Ring is also a good remake that I'd add to that pile but there have been a lot more meh horror remakes than good ones and they all come from that early to mid 2000s period
