Sounds like serious mismanagement and incompetence lead them to running out of money. If they can't pay their employees to finish the game it's gonna end like that.

I made it to the first house in season 1... Never played the series again. I'll finally play thru them one of these days

I don't know how buying companies work, but why couldn't Sony, or Microsoft purchase Telltale? Especially Microsoft, since they're in desperate need of more first party story driven games.
Why would they do that? The company failed. They don't even own any IPs. They just licensed IPs from other companies. It was a rather large studio that churned out games that did mostly mediocre.
