He's using PC as a catch all term but yeah compared to the 70s? They're extremely neutered.

70s was still the era of grindhouse cinema and people just doing whatever and really responding to the culture. Vietnam, inflation, crumbling city streets, a whole lot of violence, and just a country in disarray following Watergate. Movies from that era had a different feel than the 80s, which is really where the era of the blockbuster took off.

When there was more money to be made in movies, of course they're going to have smoother edges. This is still the era of Amblin, which is something that wouldn't fly in the age of Taxi Driver, Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Across 110th St

And that's mainly why the backlash in here is so heavy :heh:

He isn't entirely wrong.

Bingo. it's my "childhood" too but nikkas in here love putting on rose colored glasses rather than taking a step back and looking at context. Take the emotion out of it and just look at the shyt.

Y'all are hopping way too heavily on the "PC" comment and missing the forest for the trees. I think he clearly meant "palatable" when said politically correct

Exactly. 80s movies were made to be digestible for a mass audience. 70s movies were not lol.

An X rated movie was nominated for an Oscar during the 70s. There's no way in hell that happens in the 80s or anytime after the 70s

Why did i come back in here? The slander in some of these comments :picard:

Pretend like Hollywood hasn't been trying to make reboots of 80s films & shows or using music of that era due to their status as hits & cult classics

:sas2:

but this helps Tarantino's point more than it hurts it. Rebooting 80s films/shows isn't about the films being layered explorations of individuals and our society, but rather searching for commercial success in a proven formula. The fact so many of these reboots fail shows that these 80s properties don't speak to the current times...only young filmmakers living right now can.

I wouldn't even say its about being digestible. 70s movies to me are raw, unpolished and a little sloppy in terms of movie making. Even the “classics”. There’s a reason that decade was so underrepresented on the AFI greatest list.

I’m not of the opinion that that style gets some automatic “its meant to be artsy” pass.

Its why I cant stand David Lynch. Dude’s movies are sloppy but he always gets a pass on rep.

You can always rip off Taxi Driver call it a superhero movie and make a billion.

I don’t know wtf Tarantino talkin bout…. I watched a bad guy snort coke off a fresh pair of titties in robocop, a gang of kids did… made in the eighties…

Matter of fact I could probably think of a bunch on non pc movies in the eighties…. violence in movies seriously began in the eighties

I think that rawness is needed tho and fits the time line. this is also coming out of the studio system so directors and writers took more chances due to the newfound freedom
