I get what he is saying but 80's movies are just pure unadulterated awesomeness, simple straight to the point 90 minutes of coke fueled fun.

posters getting caught up on the PC comment and not really listening to what he said shows just how poor people's cognitive skills have become...one listen should make it clear he isn't talking about PC in the sense other old white guys complain about "PC" do...He clearly thinks movies got dumbed down and directors got handcuffed to make films more appealing for audiences.

It's not about portraying minorities in better way or using slurs less if at all...but rather dumbing down characters to negate entire films to make dumb viewers feel good at the end of 2 hours. Interesting ideas aren't fully explored because after an hour, the next 20 mins are being spent reversing all of that to fit in the cliche a$$hole turns good ending. Same way we shyt on the Jennifer Aniston rom-coms, well Tarantino is hinting that the 80s started that trend.
Even still most of that does not apply to characters and movies in the 80s. Sounds like he hates a certain type of character development and movie where the a$$holes turn into a good guy. He can't blame the 80s for that shyt bc he wants the characters a$$holeness to be further explored for his sake for damn near 3 1/2 -4 hours like his films. Who's to say that shyt will be interesting to begin with? He's acting like everything started to be cookie cutter or followed a certain formula when that's just not true. Were there propaganda films...sure we were coming towards the end of The Cold War with Russia and Cuba (Red Dawn, Rocky IV, Invasion USA, War Games, Top Gun, etc.) but it wasn't like we were beat over the head with it constantly. People threw a lot of shyt at the wall just to see what stuck and a lot of it was groundbreaking. There were more diverse films back then that just can't be denied so him acting like directors were handcuffed by the studios is just off the mark. Sounds like he just doesn't like the 80s b/c it became big business and made people feel good after watching movies.

And how was it too politically correct with shyt like:

Porky's
Porky's Revenge
Revenge of The Nerds (yall know the rape scene)
Bachelor Party (a chic fukked a horse)
Evil Dead
Evil Dead 2
Terminator
Caddyshack 1 and 2 (Hell Bill Murray and Chevy Chase were both in this shyt and Bill Murray was more of a retarded grounds keeper that never learned his lesson and Chevy the playboy who ended up changing from being selfish to helping and teaching the young caddy how to golf. The fukk is Tarantino talking about? )
Friday The 13th movies
Phantasm movies
Day of The Dead
Night of The Demons

I can keep going but the more I think about it the more retarded he sounds. We not gonna even get into the intro of cable, VHS tapes, and adult film boom.

Cant forget these classics :blessed:. 80's had too much all around output lb 4 lb, the list really is endless. Tarantino is trippin'.:yeshrug:

I don't think everything became cookie cutter after the 80s, but a formula was definitely being formed for what would be deemed a money maker, that why the blockbuster came to be after Jaws. Films that forwent the typical complexity of films of that decade which is still in play today and even worse now. This is probably what Tarantino is really mad about. Films are being denied if the suits can't see how it would make a profit, killing ideas from young filmmakers who could start a new wave.

As for what Tarantino likes...he grew up on the French New Wave & New Hollywood films so that is what he holds in high regard and will defend, which will cause some biases. It's no different than the other side of the spectrum...there's a medium which has to be found...90s was a perfect time for films that explored complex themes as well as big blockbusters and that's probably what QT wants under this whole rant...balance

Someone on Reddit really broke down the shift in cinema from the 70s to the 80s. It was mainly because of the failure of the movie Heaven’s Gate which came out in 1980 and basically ended the “New Hollywood” era, the period where you had auteur directors revolutionizing film and doing their own thing with little studio interference

I think he meant 80s movies were more linear. Protagonist is met with challenges then triumphantly conquers in the end

The 90s were basically an extension of the 80s with mostly better graphics and gameplay. We saw the independent film makers make their marks but it was a similar decade of films just more grand and expensive.

Kind of agree. 70's movies have this gritty rawness that the 80s lacked. 70s was right after Vietnam and I think the movies reflected the disillusionment a lot of Americans had with their country and they were much more morally ambiguous with more anti-heroes. The 80s was during the Reagan era so the movies were simplified a bit more with clear cut good and evil. Plus you had your anti-communism propaganda films. Just look at the original Rocky vs. Rocky IV to see the clear difference between 70s and 80s cinema. Of course you had your exceptions but for the most part, I agree with QT

Yes rocky 4 is a cartoon compared to the first even tho all the first 4 are classics

I think he was really trying to say that the 80s style movies had too much optimism and didn't feel as gritty and like they were challenging the status quo like what we got in the 60s and 70s.

And hes still wrong because we got documentaries like hoop dreams, and movies with dark endings like the last American virgin. Matter of fact there were movies that came out with the same type of tone as some of HIS movies with the same levels of gratuitous violence. Now if he's talking dialogue and how people actually talked he's STILL wrong because that was the same decade that gave us Beverly hills cop and the breakfast club

But stuff like Beverly Hills Cop still had that colorful packaging
