Supergirl: Jenna Dewan-Tatum to Recur as Lucy Lane, Jimmy Olsen's Ex
By Rebecca Iannucci / August 3 2015, 5:27 PM PDT

This fall, Supergirl will be giving some serious side-eye to Jenna Dewan-Tatum; The Witches of East End alumna will recur as Lucy Lane on the CBS drama, TVLine has confirmed.

As we first reported, Lucy — sister of Lois Lane — is brash, funny and successful in her own right. In keeping with DC Comics lore, she will also be an ex-girlfriend of Jimmy Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), Kara’s new CatCo media conglom colleague. (Considering Kara’s immediate crush on Jimmy in the series’ pilot episode, Lucy’s presence will not be a welcome one.)

Lucy Lane is one of several DC Comics characters to have adopted the Superwoman mantle, though there’s no word yet on whether that will play into Dewan-Tatum’s role on the show.

Dewan-Tatum is the latest in a string of Supergirl castings, including Chris Browning (Sons of Anarchy) as villain Reactron and Peter Facinelli (Nurse Jackie) as iconic DC Comics character Maxwell Lord.

Supergirl debuts Monday, Oct. 26, at 8:30/7:30c, before moving into its regular Mondays-at-8 time slot.

:ohhh: I actually don't know much about Lucy Lane. I only know her from that 1 episode of 90's "Superman: the Animated Series" she was in & those couple episodes of "Smallville" she was on.
Back in the day she appeared in Jimmy Olsen's solo comic where shyt like this happened on the regular:

Supergirl Producers Reveal More DC Characters and Address Pre-Debut Criticism

Red Tornado, Non and Sam Lane among the new additions.

Producers and cast from Supergirl took the stage on Monday at the 2015 TCA Summer Press Tour where they revealed that three more notable DC Comics characters are headed to the series: General Sam Lane, Red Tornado and the villain Non.

While the producers had no casting news for these characters yet, they did promise that Non -- played in Superman: The Movie and Superman II by Jack O'Holloran -- would be a "slightly different take on the character." For those who need a quick refresher, Non, a Kryptonian grunt, is traditionally a silent strongman. Red Tornado is an android superhero and General Sam Lane is Lois Lane's father and a US Army general. Jenna Dewan-Tatum was recently announced as playing Lucy Lane, Lois' sister, on Supergirl.

Superman exists on the series and is mentioned, referenced and briefly seen in the pilot (albeit in a shadowy manner), but currently, the producers don't plan to directly bring him onto the series and instead focus on Kara and her adventures. However, they acknowledged the strong influence Richard Donner's classic Superman films had on their re-imagined world.

"When dikk Donner sees this show, I think he’ll be really proud that he inspired it,” DC Entertainment's chief creative officer Geoff Johns said. As if to further the point, the panel also noted that Peter Roth, the president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. said that seeing incoming Supergirl star Melissa Benoist auditioning for the role was the "closest feeling" he has had since first seeing Christopher Reeve as Superman.

Executive producers Andrew Kriesberg and Greg Berlanti, who are also behind DC-based TV series The Flash and Arrow over at The CW, noted that in a kismet way, Benoist was the first actor they saw for this role, just as Grant Gustin was the first actor they saw for The Flash, and Stephen Amell was the first actor they saw for Arrow. As Berlanti pointed out, his experiences on those shows means he's had to deal with pre-series judgements and opinions from comic fans following initial photos and promos for those shows in the past. Supergirl is just the latest in a chain and it's business as usual.

"We always try to imagine what the show is if you remove the super powers from them," he went on. "We added a workplace element because that hadn't been showcased, and also an adult, sibling relationship."

Those relationships will be at the core of the series, the EP continued, and any action scenes they add in afterwards are just gravy.

Elaborating more on some fan concerns that the series would lean too heavily into romance or other criticisms before Supergirl has even debuted, Berlanti remarked, "I would just say we experienced it with any show we introduce." He said that with Arrow, The Flash and now Supergirl, "What’s interesting to us, always, is we have similar formulas for all the shows, regardless of the gender or characters. You want to allow for a show that will allow for different kind of stories. Action and romance and all the things you’ve come to love about the comics themselves.”

He recalled, “The very first time we showed a picture of Amell in the Arrow outfit, there was initial conversation about that,” but that he hoped, when it came to comics fans, “Once they watch a couple episodes, they can determine what they enjoy about the hsow and we can see what we can improve on. People come for action and end up staying for the characters and vice versa. It’s a healthy dialogue and I think all of those things are great. Hopefully they check it out themselves and determine themselves what they think about it.

He added that all of these criticisms feel very similar to what they went through with Arrow and The Flash. “Once they see the pilot – hopefully legally! – they can determined themselves what they think is exciting about it.”

"If you remove the action set pieces, [the Donner films] had something that imprinted on our brains at that time in our lives. There was a relatability. Melissa to me is the most evocative since Christopher Reeve in terms of that."

"The first time Melissa walked on the set wearing this suit, none of us said, 'Oh there's an actor wearing a suit,'" executive producer Ali Adler added. "It was 'Oh, there's Supergirl!'"

Supergirl debuts Oct. 26 at 8:30 p.m. ET before settling into its permanent time slot on Nov. 2 at 8 p.m. ET.

Superman will not appear in CBS’ ‘Supergirl’

By Roth Cornet | Monday, Aug 10, 2015 1:26 PM

When “Supergirl” launches on CBS this October don’t expect to see her more famous cousin Superman make an appearance.

Now, of course Superman is alluded to both in the trailer for the series and in the pilot that was screened at San Diego Comic Con. However, Kal-El will seemingly function as more of a faceless Charlie (of “Charlie’s Angels”) to Kara Zor-El, rather than an active mentor.

Chief Creative Officer at DC Comics, Geoff Johns, was on hand to discuss the series at this morning’s TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour.

“He will be a back-burnered life,” Johns said of Superman’s presence in the CBS series. “You won't see him exactly on screen. You will see him in the background, but he does play a part in her evolution of becoming a superhero.”

There are likely several reasons to hold Superman back. First, though the DC cinematic and television universes are separate, audience confusion is certainly possible ahead of the release of “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Additionally, it may make sense to give the allusion that her Superman may in fact be the same man that we see in the films. Though, that would potentially create several story issues. Johns declined to respond when asked if “Supergirl” is definitively separate from the DC cinematic universe, however, which is a change from his previous absolute separation stance. So it’s certainly possible that they’re leaving the door open to a link. Finally, the series will want to establish that Kara is a character that can stand on her own before brining in stunt appearances.

To that effect, producer Ali Adler concluded by saying, “We are very excited that this is the adventures of ‘Supergirl’...It's very much her point of view.”

Let us know what you think in the comments.

Do you want to see Superman in the new “Supergirl” series? Or would you find that distracting?

“Supergirl” will premiere on CBS on Oct. 26 at 8:30/7:30c.

CBS Boss Says Supergirl Will Have Bigger Audience Than Gotham

CBS's chairman on airing Supergirl against Gotham and why she's not concerned

10 Aug 2015 By Eric Goldman

gothamsupergirl1280jpg-73e8c0_160w.jpg

With the ever-increasing number of DC Comics-based shows on multiple networks, perhaps it was inevitable, but it was still noteworthy when CBS chose to program their new series Supergirl right up against Gotham on FOX this fall, with both airing Mondays at 8:00pm.

Today at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour, CBS’s chairman, Nina Tassler, was asked about this decision.

“Well, I think that they’re different audiences,” said Tassler. “I think Supergirl has a much bigger, broader audience. It’s more family entertainment. And they look different, they feel different.”

Tassler added, “We had 14.1 million streams of the [Supergirl] trailer. I don’t think anyone is worried about, 'Oh my god, there’s not enough audience out there to watch both those shows.' I think there will be.”

As of today, the initial Supergirl trailer actually has 14,200,000+ views on CBS’s YouTube channel and, by comparison, FOX’s original Gotham trailer has 10,500,000+ views on that network’s official YouTube channel - and considering that Gotham now been airing for the past year, the interest in the Supergirl trailer, at the least, is notable.
