Do I need to hook it up to a tv for initial setup of can I get it set up straight out the box in portable mode?
Nah you can start undocked.
This game is incredible. It was one of the few games this year that I played almost every single day until I beat it.
the fights with Browser are the best in the series and the last level of the game is some of the most fun I've had in gaming.
Nintendo did a great job with this one.

There's a beanstalk to sky level at Bowser's Castle that is a great spot to grind coins if you need to. That's what I used to get to 999 moons. It took me around an hour there to get enough coins to buy 119. Grinding always sucks but I didn't think it was that bad. I only needed to grind for coins for the rest of the moons. I was able to buy every outfit with the coins I gathered through normal gameplay without grinding. Yep even the 9999 one
