I didnt know this as a kid....This is what it was all about to me. When nikkaz toss the red shells at you, then you just powerslide into a turn and you had a good chance of dodging it
The amount of moments i couldve had.

Oh no bruh, I didn't need to do a jump by a wall. I could be out in an open space.Didn't need to dodge 'em if you had a Green Shell or Banana. If you had neither, taking a hard turn into a wall and jumping at the right time would save you.
We got so good at it, we ONLY used Green Shells.
The SNES is the best because it rewarded good driving. That rubber band bullshyt was kept to a minimum and you could actually lap people. Also I felt like the offensive and defensive options were pretty equal unlike the later installments where defense was phased out more and more with each release. None of that blue shell nonsense and if someone had a red shell it was not an automatic hit. You could use a green shell, banana, feather, or mushroom around a corner so the shell would hit a wall. With the games now you gonna get hit with bullshyt constantly, even if you are good.
An extra benefit that seems to be completely gone now is that the tracks were mostly self contained. I could bank green shells off walls and hit people up the track. Or a green shell could be bouncing around the track for multiple laps. With the way that tracks are made now the green shell wouldnt bounce off anything, it would just go off the track or hit a hazard.
know u was foodme never knowing you could dodge red shells like that
