man, words cannot express the memorable moments the og mario kart gave me and my childhood friends. im kinda shocked at the amount of n64 responses, but i guess its the age disparity. nowadays, everything is all about online multiplayer, but back in the 90's, if you had og mario kart, turtles in time, street fighter,mortal kombat, twisted metal 2... your house was live. had the n64 kart, but it didn't grasp me like the snes version. the level design in the og kart was

although,...the gamecube racing and car choices were better, on double dash.

This is what it was all about to me. When nikkaz toss the red shells at you, then you just powerslide into a turn and you had a good chance of dodging it

yeah,...but you couldn't be a certified psycho and chase/terrorize nikkaz on stealth mode in battle mode like on N64.
battle mode was where I learned little kids are psycho's at video games where they can compete with out hitting:
forward down, diagonal and a keystroke...
I got mad swag playing little shawty's on N64, Mario kart battle mode.

MARIOKART64, battlemode was a ruthless gamechanger outside and better than the SNES battle mode on mariokart.

you would have gotten changed in battlemode on Mario kart 64.

Well sir, I have some terrible news that might burst your bubble a lil. bit. So was I
Went to regionals back to back years. They had Clayfighter, Turtles Tournament fighter, NBA Jam one year to qualify. I even got the patch and whatever else they gave out still

Now, the crushing thing you I guess wasn't aware of. (And why should anyone)
I lost in the regionals to this little kid. I was young, but kid was like 7/8 young. Easy comp.
So anyways, I build up a double digit lead, and I end up losing because NBA JAM is known for computer assistance. Same reason why I didn't like Mario Kart 64. You couldn't turn computer assistance off in that game, so the game is broken from that standpoint. (Tru Story)

Now NBA Jam, you can turn it off. But they didn't. So in regionals after the double digit lead, it made me miss shot after shot. I recall missing a dunk, then turning to an offical and saying "you got computer assistance on " and he looked at me like "what the fukk is that"

Lil kid comes back, takes a one point lead with a desperation 3 and a few seconds left. My last shot clangs, crowd goes wild cuz this lil fukker lives another day. Tru fukkin Story
(Battlemode, just wasn't as fun as the SNES version to most I knew. So we didn't get it in. I would have wanted to but the rest of the game was ass)

I know Nintendo's never going to do it, but if they re-released a port of this game with 4 players none of the other games in the series would be able to compete.
Having an ocean of content is no substitute for good old fashioned in-depth gameplay.
