Suicide Squad bombs at the box office. $26.5M Domestic.

Slightly misleading title as WB was expecting a 30 million opening (similar to Jungle Cruise’s 34m) due to the covid situation, so 26 million is more underwhelming than a flat out bomb.
Nevertheless, it’s a shame because it’s a dope movie and p4p one of the better/best comic book movies in recent memory; not to mention Idris got the lead role and killed it, but now who knows the state of the franchise.
Just goes to show you the importance of timing: this should’ve been the first SS movie 5 years ago; and with the initial DCEU roll out and hype train, it’d have cleared a billy (first one was trash and still did 700m+). Now it’s stuck battling COVID and whatever past reservations from it’s predecessor.

The day and date streaming is here to stay. I’m willing to even pay $20-$30 for these movies at home.
You didn’t have to pay extra to see it so….. I would hope it got got a lot of views.
If studios are going to go with this business model, then they will have to rethink the way they make movies in general. Expectations will have to change and budgets will have to decrease.
The new one is technically considered as a "standalone film" so watching the first one isn't really necessary to watch. Although, there are characters from this film that appeared in the first one.
Could mean a couple of things really:
- People are getting tired of Superhero movies because of over-saturation.
- It's a DC Property, and DC = Warner Brothers, which really isn't doing so hot.
- Suicide Squad itself really doesn't click with people.
they probably should have included a scene showing Superman vs Idris since he's in jail because of what he did

Pre-pandemic Joker did over a billion, Aquaman did over a billion, The Batman was trending heavy and during the pandemic ZSJL was one of the most viewed things on HBO.

The Batman is scheduled for March 2022 and is theaters only for now. But... again who knows what will happen. Spider-Man supposed to come out in a few months and we don't even got a trailer out yet..
Nobody really knows if anything will be back normal.

WB, Disney, Paramount, and the other studios need to just take the L for every movie released in 2021. WB did it to themselves though by releasing it on Max same day as in theaters though.

I watched it on HBO Max Thursday night.
but to be fair, the trailers were terrible. and though the reviews and film twitter response was great, that does not always translate. they did say it did well on Max, 2nd behind Mortal Kombat.
i peeped Mendelsons article and he was on a spaces earlier on twitter and akwardly David Ayer was a listener.

ton of factors here - obviously Delta, HBOMax, people writing it off b/c the first one is one of the WOAT movies, and i bet there is Harley Quinn fatigue at this point.

it's a hit for HBO Max of course but i do wonder how many subs these platforms need to keep making big budget movies... Most of Netflix movies are not really big budget.
HBO is putting out $100M-$200M movies on the platform..
