The thing about bleaching that kills me is that those creams are NOT developed by black people at all.

It ain't hard to tell these white people/companies that make these products know that insecure black people will buy them so they probably have chemicals in them that can cause scarring and health problems down the line. This is why when I was in college, I was just mad uneasy with all these labs and shyt around. We don't know what they're doing in those labs. Probably experimenting on how to break down melanin and all sorts of stuff. There are already labs where black and african phenotypes and DNA is being experimented on, this is WHY we need more black people in the sciences to stop whiteys from trying to f*ck with us this way.

Good post.

But honestly, it's like African culture is so removed from Western/European/American culture I would honestly think we would have enough pride to avoid this mess.
Well that's the thing it really isn't as far removed as we'd like to think. I don't think we'll ever know the extent of how many babies were thrown out with the bathwater, wrt to indigenous African culture in the clamour to conform to European standards from the colonial era onwards. You have to ask yourself where that pride would actually materialise from.

National identity? Some lines drawn on a map by a white dude.
Historical identity? Was hijacked by colonialism.
Ethnocentric pride? Largely a function of African languages that in no way reflect western societies.

But yeah, I try explaining it to people on here. There's a real concentrated effort that I feel is put upon Africans in America to "assimilate" into American culture. And for us, it's the hardest.
Well that's the thing, it goes back to what I was saying. The extent of that pressure comes at least in some part from the fact that culturally speaking what African emigrees are coming from isn't really all that concrete otherwise there wouldn't be so much shame associated with it.

I
mean, look at African Americans. Most of y'all have names like Brad or John or Kerry or Mary and last names like Washinghton and Jackson and McNabb. On a resume looking for jobs, y'all good as gold. Most of y'all are seen as "more" American that us. Us, on the other hands, we just can't do it like that. White people can't even pronounce our names and would like to use "Americanized" names to refer to us. For example, my dad's name is Iyalla, but most people in his profession (he's a doctor) refer to him as Ned (his middle name). That's just indicative of the environment they came up in where other people have to change to comfort their own ignorance and unwillingness to learn and think outside the box.
With names its often more practical than anything else i.e. the confidence in a personal identity garnered simply from not having to constantly repeat yourself. I agree though its hard for most to imagine how marginalised people treating their name like it shouldn't exist can make somebody feel. On the other hand it helps you to stand out in ways that millions of Brads Johns and Kerry's never will. At the very least you'll do better than African Americans with names like Deshawn Tyrone and Shaniqua but that's neither here nor there.

As well, Africans are seen as the closest thing to uncivilized animals there is. There are still racist white mofos that think we aren't even human. Think about that; In 2014, there are white academics that use Africans as some sort of case study in comparison to apes or primates. In the news, most Africans are seen as violent warlords, diseased beasts, rapists, AIDS carriers, hungry and starving, looking for handouts, and incapable of running their own lives. Africans are seen in western media as charity cases and the worst is always applied to us. Even African Americans talk shyt on us and see us like the rest of Americans and call us "african booty scratchers" and shoot themselves in the foot.

So, I can see how this self-hate complex manifests itself horribly with Africans.
Yeah this stems from a purer kind of unchallenged ignorance that we really can't do much about. Educating people one by one doesn't bear thinking about. But I think its fair to say that things have got a lot better for Africans in the West and they stand to get better. The only real way we have of challenging preconceptions is by existing in contradiction of them.

Its no coincidence that ..they teach us to hate ourselves and kill each other off and we do so
while they are waiting to take our place while they are tanning their skin...perhaps they
know something that we dont....

The amount of information that is kept from us about ourselves is really sad and anger inducing.
:what: BLACK WOMEN ARENT BLEACHING MUCH AT ALL...
AFRICAN WOMEN DO THAT shyt AND MOST OF IT IS OVERSEAS.

IRONICALLY ASIANS BLEACH AS MUCH AS ANYBODY.

ON A SIDE NOTE
I HAVE SEEN PLENTY OF REAL LIGHT SKINNED WOMEN WITH THE SAME FACIAL FEATURES AS THIS UGLY CHICK
AND c00nS DONT CARE CUZ THEY LIGHT SKINNED...

the underlined:

Darker skinned asians in countries like Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam are frowned upon and hated.
Indians (like I've mentioned) have a caste system that puts lighter skinned indians at the top and darker skinned indians at the bottom.
Black hispanics are treated like dirt in countries like Mexico and Puerto Rico and from living in Bushwick and watching Telemundo, I have never seen any black or dark skinned hispanic on Telemundo/Spanish that had curly/kinky hair and non-anglo/european features.

I knew some spanish girls (the few there were) in Pittsburgh that bleached their skin. It was easy to tell cause their skin tone on their faces and hands were blotchy and uneven.

All of those countries/groups have been touched by colonization/European influence in one way or another.

Colorism is the classic hiearchy of power. And the common factor is that dark skin...is equivalent to being seen as lowly.

White skin/pale= privileged (cause if you're not in the sun, you obviously are rich/wealthy and don't have to work).
Dark skin= poor/servant/worker (cause they were out in the sun and had to work. Working class=low class)

 @ this sly way of trying to rationalize skin bleaching

black women wearing blonde hair was self hating 50 yrs ago and it's self hating today. but i wouldn't even be shocked if skin bleaching became the social norm in 50 yrs.

I personally don't agree with it, but do we have to rationalize it?Skin is like any other organ. If you can change your breast size, butt size, nose etc what makes skin off limits? The only reason I consider it "off limits," because there is no official legit, FDA, doctor approved way of bleaching ones skin. However, what about when that day comes? Can we really demonize these people?

:skip: I see light skinned girls with the same facial features as this bleacher everyday. And dudes are still up on em like fresh meat. So what does that say?:patrice:

honestly, if it wasn't for the pictures before I wouldn't even be able to tell if she bleached or not.

ehh:patrice:
no this particular girl is obviously mixed. there are 100% Africans who might look like Gabrielle Union or even taraj P henson but not like this girl unless they're from the Horn of Africa or towards the Northern Part of the continent. So your point still stands.

And Lupita is not ugly breh. She's just bald headed.

lupita is not fine or Gorgeous either

Man, it ain;t rocket science when it comes to Western Civilizaton/society.

White/light skinned = right/"normal" (cause of white supremacy and white skin being seen as "normal"). See the concept of a "default human" and Peggy MacIntosh's "Decoding white Privelege" for more details on this.

Women are already marginalized and cut down if they don't fit to some male dictated standard because of a sexist/patriarchal society.

Black/dark skinned= gross/criminal/diseased/poor/ugly/insert negative adjective here

Black women/black people in the eyes of eurocentric society and everyone else are always seen as ugly. Look at ads with models ad you'll always notice how the black models are always pushed to the far right of the picture or at the end....almost as if people don't want to see them. Dark skinned black people are seen as ugly, or a niche, or a rare uncorn in society. Look at how uncomfortable people are around really dark skinned Africans to the point where they feel they have to make jokes about them. People like Alek Wek and Lupita really expose alot of people's insecurities when it comes to being dark skinned blacks. Not even recognizing that this is our nature and what makes us unique as humans...being different.

Go on twitter and type in "dark skinned". You'll read such enriching comments from so-called black people about how he/she is "too dark" and making all sorts of gifs and photoshops that would make your most ardent white supremacist on st0rmfr0nt jealous cause he didn't think of that.

Even Indian people who are as dark as me love them some whiteys and hate black folks. Even when they're at the absolute BOTTOM of the caste system that white/european influence is responsible for that led to slavery in the Americas.

So ofcourse, this leads black women to hate their skin color. Again, it's not rocket science.

Then how do you explain Tyson Beckford being the world's top male model for years. He is darkskinned. Black women keep that self hate shyt going not brothers. Naomi campbell is dark too
