I think you're seriously underestimating the extents to which this already happened during the colonial era. There's a ton of great literature on this. Read up on works by Frantz Fanon (particularly "Black Skin, White Masks" (1952!)),Chinua Achebe, Ayi Kwei Armah and many others.

Culture and heritage are embedded in language and practice. How many 1st and 2nd gens do you know that speak English perfectly yet don't understand their mother tongue? How many Africans do you know that have even minimal knowledge of the religions and practices that have almost been completely superceded by Christianity and Islam? How many Africans do you know that insist on wearing their tradition dress to formal functions and unconsciously place it on the same tier as a suit and tie?

The reality is Africans were marginalising themselves long before they left Africa. They don't need to tell you it makes them uncomfortable because what matters is that it makes you uncomfortable. If your cultural identity was grounded in something solid it wouldn't even matter what they thought. It's all different sides of the same story. The reason why Africans feel at pains to abandon their culture and assimilate is because no reason presents itself that encourages them to hold onto it. If you understood who had fought and died for it, what it meant to those that came before you and were able to forge those lessons into something vital to the present it simply wouldn't be an issue, but so much of that was lost long before we were born.


A vacuum longs to be filled. I feel its important to recognise the extent to which the cultural insecurities of the minority can appear to manifest as the as the ignorant insistence of the majority. If you truly believe in it nobody can remove your autonomy. Everybody in America experiences American culture through their own lens. Black Americans cleave harder to notions of blackness than Africans do largely because their lens was forged as an oppressed minority. Honestly I wouldn't read too much into that.

The divide between Africans and African Americans is unfortunate but not surprising though I feel that's more a result of limited exposure on the part of African Americans and I think that should improve given a generation or two.

I think you're kind-of exaggerating the notion that Africans have the need to abandon their culture. Anyone who comes to America is going to assimilate to the greater culture anyway.

I've gone through every third page and after seeing one too many postings about how low the black woman's self esteem is, I thought it was about time for balance. This very sad issue isn't a black woman things...it's a world wide thing, as others have so eloquently pointed out.

I've gone through every third page and after seeing one too many postings about how low the black woman's self esteem is, I thought it was about time for balance. just being honest, black women aren't the only people suffering from this type of thought. I don't see blackmen bleaching yet. But... Black men like lightskin women for a reason. Mostly, because its a status symbol to them.

Personally, I've had all types of the color spectrum of black....the mixed curly haired thick, the redbone looks mixed type, the lightskin model type slender, the brown (my favorite), the dark chocolate thick....all of them are just women & look great but some dudes is stuck on that color ish hard too.

Its black men that bleach also, dont get it twisted.

okay, okay, fine. still, it's really a black woman thing. you'd be hard pressed to find a regular black american bleaching.

Ud be hard pressed finding a regular black american woman that bleaches also. From personal experience, I can tell you that its African men that bleach as well. Some big time Congolese male celebrities are bleachers. As far as AAs, from memory I think I can recall at least one example of a non celebrity dude bleaching that ive seen on the internet.

Generally anything that has to do with appearance affects women more, for different reasons, but self hate and bleaching definitely aint exclusive to women.

Not really, the two situations are nothing alike. Christianity syncretised pretty organically throughout Europe over many centuries. Catholicism and Protestantism are unmistakeably European in their structure, emphasis history and practice and are inimical to the foundation of what we actually consider Europe. Have you ever considered how weird it is that for a billion Catholics the centre of Christianity is Rome and not Jerusalem? Never found it funny that liturgical Latin is the official language of the church and not ancient Aramaic or Hebrew? Wondered how it makes sense that the monarch of Britain is automatically the head of the Church of England?

Christianity was systematically and deliberately imposed upon colonised African states in a remarkably short period of time. Consider that there were only 9 million Christians in Africa in 1900 and the 380 million there were in 2000. Missionaries and conversion were vital to the colonial process and were key in establishing a moral hierarchy that allowed Africans to accept European rule.

I wasn't referring to the need to assimilate in itself, more the acuteness of the anxiety that comes with that need specifically for 1st and 2nd generation immigrants. Africans seem to have more of a problem with it and I was addressing that.

yeah, American Black women don't really bleach as much as black women in Africa, the Carribean, and Europe...and yes a few men do it to but not nearly as much as the women.
