Don't think that he's in the same for as the others, but Michael Mann deserves to be mentioned in this thread.

Michael Mann is the MAN. No he's not Steven level but has a pretty good catalog:

THE THEIF
MANHUNTER
THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS
HEAT
THE INSIDER
ALI
COLLATERAL
PUBLIC ENEMIES (got to much hate, movie was good)

Interesting Interview. Steven Spielberg talks about the difference between him and some other Legendary Directors:

Hitchock to me is the goat. I just recently rewatched bout 15 of his movies. He was so far ahead of his time and he could do any genre. North by northwest is gawdly. But on the low the trouble with harry had me laughing constantly.

Tonight's the night. Will the GOAT clean up for the last time in his career? Will he win his 3rd Best Director Oscar? We Will See.

Spielberg is the greatest commercial director ever yeah. Not the greatest director, not even close - his work lacks uniqueness, and he hasn't brought the artform forward in anyway. His stuff is pretty generic, but he is a great storyteller.

Pretty funny that 99% of the directors mentioned in this thread are American. The greatest director isn't American, although Lumet is a nice call.

Just saw Ali again recently and it's not very good. It's carried by Will Smith and Jon Voight.
