Who's surprised. Most nikkas rather be in entertainment or average 9-5 jobs rather than contribute to the advancement of human society.
That's not it, nikkas (me included) would rather make actual money, then be stuck in a program for almost a decade that gets accolades from a few people, and only really rewards you if you enjoy your work.
Coming out of an Ivy League, or top school (like Stanford, MIT, CIT, UC-Berkeley, UCLA, MSU, UT-Austin, etc) and doing well, you can hop into something like investment banking with a starting pay of $125k, or jump straight to med-school, law school, get your MBA, or anything like that and start making six figures within a few years, if not immediately. Most young Black men and women work hard in high school and undergraduate so they can show it with a higher quality of life, not so they can slog through a decade more of schooling on a low salary/stipend.
"Advancement of human society" society sounds nice, but if you grow up poor, or lower middle class, you dream of the day you can choose a nice car, a beautiful home, have no financial issues, be able to buy the clothes you want, choose when and where you get married, vacations, children who have the world as their oyster, etc. Not grinding away 65 hours a week in a lab for a low paying job that is helping "society" more than it is helping you.
I know that sounds messed up, but its true, I chose to go into a softer major in college so my path to law school will be easier, rather than my original BioChem -> Ivy Graduate School -> Lab work, because sometimes putting money first is a better goal.

Its like an educated version of the car industry and Detroit back in the day for black folk. We had a big middle class in Detroit because of the automobile industry, but outsourcing came in and took it away. I can see something of that sort for STEM in the next 20 years where a lot of the jobs will be eliminated thanks to automation and outsourcing. I don't want all black people to put their eggs in one basket and be assed out in 20 years, like what happened to Detroit. Can't make the same mistake twice.

We need to be more entrepreneurial. Period. In STEM and elsewhere. Can't be highly skilled corporate slaves forever.
It seems like you don't understand STEM

Most people in STEM won't be outclassed...because those are the people LEADING these trends.

Everyone else is basically a worker.

Im my belief, a lot of people at age 18 are not ready for that kind of workload if they not genuinely interested in science. Yeah, the STEM majors have money in the careers, but the motivation of money can only go so far before people burn out or worse, go postal :demonic:

Sad to say, but If I was 19 and people say that the rest of my youth will be spent on something that I hate just because of having a slightly higher salary, being pissed an an understatement.
Fam, you're saying nothing but excuses now.

Even dudes who major in STEM who go into law or other civic areas tend to have more familiarity with technical fields and allow them to get jobs in things like intellectual property and development.

I plan on taking my state school Computing Engineering degree to NYC and making 110 my first year. Why the hell would I consider grad school when my mom hasnt made over 35k in her life?

Just like starting a company, becoming an actor, or a painter, its easier for people from priveledged groups to grind through grad school. They may have a parent buy that bus ticket.

And this is all I will say about education being celebrated. When I go back to my hood on the east side of bufflo and tell people from where im from what im doing with education they are proud of me. Then I tell them the jobs Im looking at and they :salute:. Then I say Im considering going to grad school instead and people :camby:.

Turning down a six figure engineering gig to hit the books for pennies for 7 more years just isnt an option for young black men.
all I can say is make sure the advanced degree is worth it cause I know it opens you up to more jobs and responsibility or an MBA will give you more management leverage.

Working when you get out for a bit is a great way to plan that next step though.

I have engineering friends who went back and got MBAs and MS's etc and are KILLING it right now.

I advocate ownership and black folk being entrepreneurial. Black folk need to branch out on their own, regardless of major in college, so that we no longer become corporate slaves.
this is an empty phrase

Some educations make it possible to BECOME owners sooner rather than others and more efficiently than others.

You ain't gonna start your own B2B parts business without some education and experience in the field...granted through a STEM education.

As others have mentioned, the black American community really does not like nerds. Yes nerds of all races don't have it made, but it reallllllly sucks for black nerds in STEM. White nerds in STEM also have an easier time finding mates because nerds are not villified in their culture. Another thing, I have never in my life seen black American kids playing around with things like arduino, raspberry pis, or lego mindstorms(ir's usually Asian and white kids)... their parent's really don't want to raise scientists and engineers. African immigrants like Nigerians and Ethiopians don't really villify nerds though because they know the importance of STEM so they produce a decent amount of people in STEM.
Jamaicans too :sas2:

Fam,

Cacs who drop out of HS are employed at a higher rate and earn more than Blacks w/ degrees

Not everyone has that entrepreneurial spirit....well not everyone will find success in STEM. Inequality is a basic tenet of capitalism. Gain a skill or create a product, learn e commerce, become a contractor is as good a odds as attempting to find an entry level job.
The point isn't helping EVERYONE its helping MORE people.

There needs to be more blacks in STEM.

I don't know why you keep taking shyt to the extreme.

We're talking about flux, not capacity.

To be honest I'd rather be someone like Pharrell than any physicist on this planet. I highly doubt any great world reknown artist/entertainer regrets not having a STEM degree. You only have about 70 years on this planet to be grand and that's it. Might as well do something you'd enjoy more than anything.

That being said, if you don't have musical talent, STEM would be the 2nd best thing to get into imo. I agree with the 2nd part of your statement 100%.

............. :snoop:

Dude, this is the fukking problem

All of the black wealth you can name is ENTERTAINERS!

Actors, musicians, athletes, talking heads, etc.

ALL of them are industry related.

None of these people own any significant businesses in things in infrastructure, industry, or any design firm of anything degree.

Well that's why the 2nd part of my post stated: if no musical talent, like perfect/absolute pitch, hyper creativity and synesthesia to the point that sights and sounds are wired. It'd be insane not to go into music if one or more of those traits were present.

Plenty of sound engineers in the music industry have degrees in electrical engineering and could school folks in math and physics too so there's that to fall back on. But you gotta have a strong ear for it. I feel Black folks could make a splash there.
