yes scanning the whole planet will tell you about it's environment and what resources are available and then scanning plants and animals on foot will give you Survey EXP. There are also some bounties on the mission boards for surveying whole planets and scanning every type of mineral and lifeforms. Sometimes you will have to land in multiple spots on the planet and scan for different things in different biomes (mountain regions, jungles, hills, etc)

there are also skills for both planet scanning and surveying that do things like allow you to zoom in further and yes the scanner from longer distances or get more info from planet scans

I guess thats what I get for manually trying to hit the ship with missles. Once I locked on it went down in seconds.

I did it a level 8.. I haven't even done any other main mission yet in the game. But I did join Sarah and them after I got the ship.
