JJ Abrams is the most overrated, xeroxed-style-over-faux-substance director alive. There are no original ideas in his work, and this is the most clear example of that flaw. It was fine for TFA, where you're introducing new characters, mixing them with old ones, all while trying to attract a new generation of fans. But here? It just sucks.
Johnson left him with nearly endless possibilities. And JJ went backwards, in every fashion. It's unchallenging, fan-service-over-all, tripe.
And The Last Jedi is far and away the best film of this trilogy. Sure it's a little messy, but it's the only one with anything to say beyond "hey, remember Star Wars?" I'm amazed that Disney let Johnson do what he did in their sandbox. And disappointed that they let JJ undo everything interesting in favor of...this.
Oh well.
And I counter with “that counter makes for terrible storytelling”it does, but i counter with "fukk Anakin."
But at the same time, Rian Johnson shat on what JJ brought forth, all within the first 20minutes of the movie. Then left the next director with a blank slate.
The Last Jedi is an okay movie as a stand-alone, but it wasn't a stand-alone. It's a horrible movie for what it was. It was 2+ hours of erasing the previous story, and killing time before the next movie.
these are the buzz words people keep using for the Last Jedi... and i think it's getting way too much credit for it. SW needed to change, and it did... kinda. big fukkin deal. the way he "subverted expectations" was fukkin dumb. He basically said "you're not special, anyone can be a Jedi" and what else?
But at the same time, Rian Johnson shat on what JJ brought forth, all within the first 20minutes of the movie. Then left the next director with a blank slate. That would be fine except it was the 3rd movie of the trilogy. You cannot have a blank slate for the 3rd movie, and 9th movie of the Skywalker Saga. Of course the next director is gonna go with what they know. Hell, it would've been worse if the OG director stayed on.
The Last Jedi is an okay movie as a stand-alone, but it wasn't a stand-alone. It's a horrible movie for what it was. It was 2+ hours of erasing the previous story, and killing time before the next movie. Had it started the trilogy off, it'd be cool. And if the first half of TFA was combined with the first half of Rise of Skywalker, it would be cool. But that's not what we got, so it is what it is. All of the movies, viewed as a saga are crap.
Wont nwg cuz I refuse to neg but you givin Rian Johnta lot of excuses. All this talk or excuse of what JJ had to deal with for ROS, but do you know how harder it is to write MIDDLE FILM with really nothing to go off of? Think about that. JJ left it to where we have Luke exiled with zero explanation in TFA. He left Finn in a coma. Left Kylo Ren in basically a coma as well. Gave nothing else to run on nor gave Rian any idea where and how this story should lead, and Rian Johnson made the best of it, on top of giving the hypocritical FANS what they asked for which was not to have a rehash of the old Star Wars and have these new characters and story go on a different direction. And now everyone is pissing on that. Granted things like the Casino subplot was terrible and some sequences like Leia in space was outright dumb, but the overall movie was WAY better than this turd of a final film. At least there was a theme, character arcs, unexpected plot twists, and it didn't try to blatantly pander.
Rian gave JJ a clean slate to conclude everything which meant that JJ could of went anywhere with ROS and did not know what do. But in retrospect, he didn't know what to do with TFA because that in itself was a same as treasure hunt while rehashing the whole A NEW HOPE story. Like why the whole plot centered on the SEARCH FOR LUKE as if Luke was somehow an ultimate badass which he NEVER WAS in the OG trilogy? It was a dumb premise to go off. Not to mention how fukked up they did Han Solo.
That would be dope asf. Only thing I would change is that he starts up a new different faction of force sensitive people and make a group. fukk being a Jedi, they're boring. Disney doesn't have the balls to do something like this thoughCan you imagine a story about a force sensitive stormtrooper who has a change of heart and leads a storm trooper revolution while learning the ways of the force and becoming a jedi. Like a stormtrooper Moses. Id watch it
