The reason for falling to the dark side wasn't that bad. If I was getting premonitions of my wife dying in childbirth, and if I was the most powerful force user in the galaxy, the "chosen one", I'd look into all possible avenues to save her. Maybe you orginaly think you can't get corrupted by the dark side due to being the "chosen one"? Plus you have existing trauma and inadequacy due to your mum being killed by the sandpeople, it would make you even more desperate.

What could have been other reasons for turning?

It didn't make much sense to stay with the Empire after Padmes death however, unless the dark side had already completely changed your psychological state.

The midichlorian explanation for the force was better than the vague mysticism of the OT IMO
