Is their any sex scenes ?

want to watch with my youngin tonight

this needs to be stickied as well
This was dope. Best Spike Lee film in a long time. Delroy don't miss when they're together. He killed it

Safe to watch with the family outside the cussing and violent historical footage/imagery.

They show a man getting shot in the head and the corpses of dead children. No way would I show this movie to kids.

I'm crying at the reviewer who called the movie complicit wiith white supremacy and now vietnamese reviewers are calling an excellent take on the war

I thought it was great movie with really really good references to the time period . (except for the fact that the marvin gaye song they used was made after martin luther king but I only know that because Marvin my favorite artist of all time, so it's whatever) I think it gets bogged down by 2 things, neither of which are Spike's fault

The biggest problem I believe was the plot the movie was adapted from the main characters were suppose to be morally ambigious cacs. So, the movie could pivot more towards the greyness of the war and the shyt that American did (Agent Orange and whatnot) . In Da 5 Bloods, the characters have really good reasons to want that gold.

the second problem was netflix screwing the hell out of Spike Lee. This shyt was too much to be not a series. It was missing black women and character development. There's too much going on in Black America in the late 60s early 70s to have a good take that short. A series would have been perfect. I wish there a way for them delve more deeper into the shyt that happened before the war to affect theses characters as well. I don't remember when they deployed but using the first few episode to delve into the watts riot, the birmingham church bombing, and the multitude of fukked up shyt going on at that time would have helped set the tone for the series. I would like to see a longer pull from the speeches he pulled from during the movie, instead of the brief interlude he was forced to use for time. I (personally, I also would have liked to see muhammad ali referenced a lot more, which they could have done with more time and a bigger budget). I just feel the late 60s had a lot fukked up shyt going on and (seeing how cacs didn't know of black wall street) would have been a decent way to illuminate them.

Going to watch the movie today.

But from historical context the french were first involved with trying to unify Vietnam. Then had backing from the US. The french say the hell with it cause they kept getting their asses kicked. The US steps and with the french telling them this ain't the war you want. These folks lead by Ho Chi Minh will fight you to the bitter end.
the french were involved before amerikka :ohhh::feedme:

Idiots don't even know history. I doubt she even knows the circumstances of vietnam. Who were the players or the geopolitics involved. I highly doubt she even understands that most folks involved were drafted and a large segment of those fighting on the frontlines in infantry were black. Not even mentioning the upheaval of the civil rights situations in the mid to late 60s and early 70s. Idiots should be seen and not heard.

I wish this i had read before I had made my post

movie feels too long and some of the points lee wants to get across are delivered too on the nose, like a school lesson instead of art. from a technical side, i love the changes in aspect ratio for the different elements of the movie but some things like guns not recoiling and land mines being way too powerful kinda take you out. however, this is still amazing. delroy lindo has to be nominated for an oscar. i know there is no theatrical release but due to the pandemic, there has to be some kind of exception.

also, the choice to have old actors play their younger selves was great. it may or may not have been out of budget necessity, but it also works to show just how much norman lost by dying so young and how he will always be like an idealized, perfect ghost to these guys because he didnt live long enough to disappoint them over the years with all the normal failings that happen to us all as we age.

all in all, it is imperfect but great and goes further to give a little more character to the vietnamese people than these movies tend to give. i am sympathetic to the concern that this movie continues the vietnamese prostitute trope, but im not sure how else they could get to certain plot elements without this particular relationship. all of these elements seem necessary but a bit overstuffed. i give it maybe an 8.5/10
