Oh an artist paid for features? So? Is that not how it usually works? He had connections cause his pops knew people, he used his pops to get in the door. Now if that's what a "plant" is, then ok, but how is that equal to him being a fraud?

No he didn't. You're thinking of Acid Rap which was his 2nd tape. His first was 10 day which only featured his crew. 10 Day built his buzz and Gambino featured him on his Royalty mixtape and took him on tour. He met Ab Soul and most of the other artists featured on Acid Rap through that tour.

Everyone running with the plant story keeps missing the fact that Acid Rap wasn't his debut.

The funny thing about this quote to me is, had Spike done a typical Hood movie, and I mean a Hood movie by the numbers with the only difference from Menace, Boys, insert name here, the people complaining about Chi-raq wouldn't have had as much criticism. Granted, I had absolutely no intention on seeing it upon seeing the trailer. It just looked bizarre and all over the place. Still, he's an artist, doing what artists do. I respect him for doing what HE WANTED TO DO, as opposed to what people wanted him to do. Adapting a Greek Tragedy was a bold azz move too.
