Todd McFarlane Says Oscar Winning Actors Have Approached Him About SPAWN; Compares The Film To JAWS

McFarlane sat down with Comic Book at Comic-Con to talk about the project, and revealed that he has some Oscar winning actors inquiring about the role. "Yeah a couple approached me," he said. "Those are still on the table, and I just recently signed with CAA, the largest and biggest talent agency in Hollywood, so they've got lots of talent that they will sort of start pushing and funneling towards it if they think that the roles are there."

He also teased that while Spawn will play a major part in the film, he wont be the focal point. "There's two big roles in the script. There's obviously sort of Spawn himself, although in a weird way it's not the biggest role, and then there's the cop. The cop is this character Twitch who's been there since issue #1. Twitch is the role in this one, and I sort of refer to him as my sheriff Brody, who is the sheriff in the Jaws movie. Although it was called Jaws, Jaws didn't really talk a lot in his movie, right? He just kind of showed up at the opportune time to make the movie worthwhile," McFarlane explained.

The comparison to Jaws is an interesting one, something he McFarlane elaborated on. "It was sheriff Brody, the humans talking, chasing the fantastical thing that sort of made the movie, and to me, there's that element. Everything else is normal in this story other than (gesture) the shadow moves, and at times even when it moves, the cop just sort of thinks he's losing his mind so he doesn't even trust that the shadow's moving. If you're a bad guy, then this thing is going to come and it's going to get you."

Spawn Won't Say A Word In His Entire Movie

The Spawn reboot will be different from its predecessor in many ways, but on one of the biggest involves its lead hero.

The original movie put the character of Spawn in the spotlight, a part portrayed by Michael Jai White. Fans followed him through the story, but Todd McFarlane reveals that the new movie will take a very different approach.

"I like to explain that it's my Jaws," McFarlane told azcentral. "Spawn doesn't say a word the entire movie, and it's the same way with "Jaws." It's about the sheriff and the people, chasing the ghost. That's it...The lead role isn’t Spawn, the lead role is a cop, like Sheriff Brody from "Jaws." I think we can hook a fairly significant actor that we want. Unlike a superhero movie, we wouldn't need an actor to put on prosthetic (makeup) or go to the gym. We just need him to act."

The new movie is still in pre-production, but McFarlane said things are moving along nicely. He also explained that Spawn is not a superhero film in the typical sense.

"We just signed off on the script, and are going into budgeting," McFarlane said. "We're also having our casting meeting...It will be dark and heavy, serious, R-rated. It won't be a superhero movie. I don't think most people would categorize it as that. It will be a supernatural thriller, like a lot of good creep movies. The only thing in the movie that's fantastic is Spawn, and anything else is otherwise normal."

McFarlane aims to keep Spawn in the $10 million range, a much smaller amount than the $40 million of the original movie, which released in 1997. That film went on to make $87 million worldwide, but McFarlane thinks keeping the budget smaller can lead to big results.

"It was the reason why I wanted to keep it small and tight," McFarlane said. He then pointed out the massive success of his new partner Jason Blum's work on Get Out. "You put out $3 million, if they had netted 25, it would've been a success, instead of the 300 million they got. 25 on a $3 million bet, that's not bad."

Spawn hits theaters in 2019.

This finna end up like Man-Thing :pachaha:

Spawn isnt a xenomorph or a predator though hes a tortured soul of what was once a man. Without words how is the audience suppose to empathize or invest? His exchanges with cogliostro is also a big aspect of his character.

Lol at holding on to spawn for dear life (to get your name in the news) for 20 something years only to now want to mess with its essence

This man has lost his mind. No wonder spawn ain’t been worth shyt for 10+ years.

At some point you gotta trust someone else with the character. Stan Lee and Kirby are The Godfather’s of this shyt and at some point, even they had to let new voices step in. Spawn will be dope again when McFarlane gets out of his own way.
