In 2000s mainstream rap the bar has been set so low that dudes will settle. It is what it is. It's where rap is now. People are so starved for something that stimulates them intellectually that they vastly overrate great, but not classic works. I couldn't believe how many people were telling me TPAB was a classic a week after it came out. Mostly hipster white kids actually. The same exact thing happened with MBDTF. G.K.M.C. was far more relatable because he tried to make an album about Kendrick, instead of a "black" album. I liked Cilvia Demo more than anything Kendrick's ever done.

I agree with Op "To Pimp a Butterfly" was slightly overrated, but the replay value's making up for it. I admit, the album does get better after listening to it more than twice, but when I first heard it, I was was let down because the hype for this album was huge.

I'm not feeling his vibe

I posted this in another thread. Kendrick a good artist, don't get me wrong. IMO his song "Ignorance is Bliss" is a Top 20 song of this decade

Honestly, I feel To Pimp a Butterly is psuedo political, and the embodiment of mediocrity

I like some of Kendrick's songs, but it feels like he's just reading a phrase book or black political terms and throwing it against the wall to see if it sticks

"We hate the po po"
"Alls my life I had to fight"
"Black power forever"
"We not gonna take this no more"
"I'm 100% Negu"
"I'm Kunta Kente"

Just seems like he's creating a patchwork book of ideas he thinks it's cool, but doesn't really feel it himself

Especially since D'Angelo used the exact same concept on his album, with better execution

Lupe may show his intelligence on front street, but I feel that his songs are actually him. Like he lives and breathes what he raps about, whether you agree with him or not. J-Cole also. That new Vince Staples album feels more authentic. Kendrick just sounds like he listened to a Public enemy album last summer and thought he should make an album about it :yeshrug:

But the beat of this "Alright" song is fire though :ehh:

His content is constructed and marketed to supposely inspire black people to a certain degree, but when confronted by the media on current social issues my Afrikaan seems to..

Produce socially conscious music, while allowing the media to force you into political correctness in interviews :sas1:

shutcho dumbass up.

People are buying Kendrick's records and hyping up his shyt because they like the music he puts out. Everybody i know in real life love his music. Just internet dweebs like you trying to create this illusion of a bandwagon just cuz you think hes overrated. Platinum albums is not the same as a Grammy. Album sales are based on if the people want to buy your shyt. Grammys are given to you buy a committee in some fancy ceremony. Not the same kind of honor.

So going platinum and record sales have nothing to do with who wins the grammys now??

So how did Young MC win a Grammy in 1990 for "Bust a Move" over Public Enemy's "Fight the Power"?

Or Macklemore winning a Grammy in 2014 for best Rap album over Kendrick?

Wow, you really are a dumbass :heh:

Bullshyt. Kendrick and his team have went all out with attempts to brainwash the public, because his music alone could never garner the attention he currently has.
Having bios on his now revamped kendricklamar.org that (used to say) He was "the evolution of tupac shakur",
Having altered audio of 2pac interviews to pretend pacs talking to and crowning him as the new 2pac
kendrick asked for the pushback he's getting.

Attention whoring and calling out nikkas (whom he did songs with) like he wanted it (for attention)
maaaaaaaaaan i could go on and on. He reaps what he sows.
Like i said, once he's forced to stand without interscope pushing the button for him,it's a wrap.
He's trash
I'm not gonna take another grown man serious who uses brainwashing as a scapegoat. :snoop:

Lupe Fiasco isn't even signed with Interscope and he's the reason I got into Kendrick's music in the first place. Next :camby:

You know you're hot when you got a bunch of posters trying to brag about the off brand version of you.
:dead:

:laff: @ Posters in here pushing the Hip Hop equivalent of "Great Value Frosted Flakes" so they can get Kendrick lamar without listening to Kendrick Lamar.

"I don't like Kendrick but *insert rapper here* is a better kendrick than kendrick. "
Can't take these clowns serious.
First it was los.
Now it's vince staples.

Yeeaaahhh...NO.
What I think is happening here is posters take THEIR perspective on Hip Hop music and project
it on everyone else.
I'm not "starved for something that stimulates me intellectually" because I listen to artists Hip Hop or otherwise at all levels of notoriety.

I listen to dudes with a couple thousand fans and dudes with millions of them and frankly I'd put Kendrick's release up against any Hip Hop release in the past 5 years, it's that good :yeshrug:

And I REALLY suggest you guys go back to the album because judging by the claims in here it's patently obviously you didn't spend much time with it.

He wrote a "black" album ? WTF ?
Did he speak on Black issues ? YES.
Was that the entirety of the content ? NO.
Over half the album is about HIS PERSONAL EXPERIENCES.
