Yo man, I can respect that. We all hear what we hear and if there's somethin off about Kendrick to you then it is what it is. However, I disagree with you. When Kendrick first came out as Kdot I'd agree because he was a Lil Wayne/Jay Z biter who didn't sound authentic at all. Once he dropped all that and became Kendrick his shyt has sounded 100% authentic to my ears, and I believe he truly is trying to push Hip Hop further. I mean just look at TPAB.....He could've just came out with another banger like "Swimming Pools" and made some generic sounding shyt to sell more records, but instead, he took a chance on making a Jazz/Soul/Funk + Hip Hop album.

I honestly feel like he's a true standout artist in a sea of mediocrity, but it's all apples & oranges so...:manny:

Like I said, I don't dislike the guy :ehh:. I just feel all the praise is a result of the past decade of utterly shytty music (With an exception of a couple artists), people are starving for an artist with some semblance of skill. I get it, as Hip Hop fans, we long for an artist to bring back that feeling :mjcry:. You said it yourself "I believe he is truly is trying to push Hip Hop forward". So I see alot of fans longing for someone. But Kendrick is using this longing by Hip Hop fans, and exploiting that for his own benefit IMO. He's basically going through a word collage of Black Power terms. Like a little kid reciting his father's tales of the Civil Rights movement, and remembered the key words to keep the story interesting. I applaud his effort, but I'm not impressed :manny:

That's cool.

I will say this though, and I may get hate for saying it but: Even compared to the older generation of Hip Hop artists I think he holds his own just fine. TBAP hit me harder emotionally than any album I've ever listened to, because so much of what he said is exactly how I feel. And the Jazzy, Soulful melodies were a perfect way to express that. I don't think he's exploiting the conscious Hip Hop fans, just that he has a lot of deeper things in his head that he likes to share and he hopes he can connect with them on that same level.

I mean no disrespect at all, but a lot of people's criticisms of KL can be said for damn near any conscious rapper if you think about it.

The lyrics are contemporary and reflecting something other than his own opinions and views.
Kendrick doesn't only rap about himself, he raps about his surroundings, people he's met, people he hasn't met and on.
Therefore he says shyt that he wouldn't say and shyt he doesn't think, which is why he has different flows and voices and moods etc in his verses. He uses phrases that have been said and are known deliberately on this album, it's pretty obvious, cause he's looking at what has been said or what's being said. Summarizing the state of the youth in his surroundings with known references.

And I can't knock your opinion, some people are "narrow" in their taste as in only fukking with people rapping from their heart to you. I enjoy nearly all styles, and I think he puts his heart into his music but in a different way. I'm not feeling any political vibe from it either, I'm feeling a micro view from the circles that he's familiar with, whether you want to put in in a political landscape or not is on you.

Kendrick Lamar is the 1st rapper where ive felt that im being forced to like. The machine behind him is so obvious. He has some cool songs and has blown me away lyrically at times but overall he's just...boring. He has literally been FORCED into our conciousness. Overly Dedicated & Section 80 was ok. (Ill be lying if i said the beats wasn't the best part to me). Money Trees, Sing About Me and Real are pretty much the only songs i listen to off G.K.M.C. And i haven't even had a desire to even listen to his latest album. I may never listen to it. Honestly, i just dont feel like his popularity is genuine. Personally i prefer Wale over K.L anyday. But at the end of the day, atleast something other than ignorance is getting mainstream shine so i :salute:to that

I'm not feeling his vibe

I posted this in another thread. Kendrick a good artist, don't get me wrong. IMO his song "Ignorance is Bliss" is a Top 20 song of this decade

Honestly, I feel To Pimp a Butterly is psuedo political, and the embodiment of mediocrity

I like some of Kendrick's songs, but it feels like he's just reading a phrase book or black political terms and throwing it against the wall to see if it sticks

"We hate the po po"
"Alls my life I had to fight"
"Black power forever"
"We not gonna take this no more"
"I'm 100% Negu"
"I'm Kunta Kente"

Just seems like he's creating a patchwork book of ideas he thinks it's cool, but doesn't really feel it himself

Especially since D'Angelo used the exact same concept on his album, with better execution

Lupe may show his intelligence on front street, but I feel that his songs are actually him. Like he lives and breathes what he raps about, whether you agree with him or not. J-Cole also. That new Vince Staples album feels more authentic. Kendrick just sounds like he listened to a Public enemy album last summer and thought he should make an album about it :yeshrug:

But the beat of this "Alright" song is fire though :ehh:
Powerful post, this is why i dont like kendrick.
