The Devil's Advocate
Call me Dad
They say laughter is contagious. Nobody hear ever laughed at a joke or a scene or anything in life, just because everyone else was laughing. But then u really thought about it and it wasn't that funny
Or better yet, you ever see something and it's not funny. But a couple friends start cracking up and you suddenly start laughing
That's all a laugh track/studio audience is for. Now old shows you tell which is real. Sometimes they'd laugh too long or clap too long and you see the actor holding a pose. Or repeating a word a few times to get them to quiet down. This comes from PLAYS.
Tv was fresh. All they had to go on was the theatre atmosphere. How can you create that at home? Make it seem like its at a play. Like people are there with you. You go to the movies, people are there with you, so they don't need it.
The crew would perform in from of a studio audience to reinforce that idea. They do takes as if it was a play. Not getting enough emotion from the crowd, then do it again. The crowd was the substitute for the crowd you'd have performing at a theatre.
As tv got bigger and the money got bigger, studio heads said fukk that. We can record this and play it back for cheap. No more audience. Once that changed, I'm guessing someone said fukk that too.
Some old heads probably stick with it, a lot of new shows and channels have done away with them. But the original point was to make u feel like you're always at the theatre
