Four-star DE Lamar recaps UF official visit
Four-star DE recaps UF official visit and details the latest in his recruitment
SEFFNER, Fla. – The Florida Gators hosted a half-dozen recruits on campus this past weekend for official visits as we inch closer to National Signing Day. One name that made the short drive up Interstate 75 for the visit was Seffner (Fla.) Armwood four-star defensive end
Malcolm Lamar.
The in-state defender has visited Gainesville numerous times over the years, and enjoyed his most recent trip yet again.
“It was good and you can tell the energy around the campus is different with new people there and you can feel it. It’s the same place with better people in my opinion. I feel like I have a better relationship with the people in just a weekend than all the other times I went to Florida. The thing that stood out the most was how much fun I had and my mom and my sister were both happy.”
During Lamar’s extended stay in The Swamp, Florida defensive line coach Sal Suneri spent the bulk of his time around Lamar getting to know him better as well as explaining their plans for him in their new 3-4 defense.
“They talked a lot about me playing early and teaching me some techniques that I could use to help me out. He compared me a lot to
Calais Campbell and he said that we have a lot of the same abilities. He told me how he’s coached 11 years in the NFL and now he’s back in college. He told me that he knows how to develop guys at each level and knows things to put guys in the best spot whether it’s height, weight, body type. They see me being a strong-side defensive end that could even get some move inside if need be. They like that I am versatile.”
The 6-foot-5, 280-pounder was accompanied by this mother and sister during him time on Florida’s campus. UF’s coaching and recruiting staff made it a point to make them feel included.
“They loved it and they loved the coaches,” Lamar said of his family. “The coaches made them feel very welcome and my family was just happy the whole time. I brought my sister with me and when we went to the UF basketball game, my sister plays basketball, so she really liked that. It was really cool for them to have some of the girls’ basketball players meet my sister.”
The four-star’s player host for the weekend was freshman defensive tackle
T.J. Slaton, who is coming off his first season of college football, which saw him get several meaningful snaps.
“His message was just that if I come here to be ready to work,” Lamar said of Slaton. “He was saying they needed some help on the defensive line but they wanted guys to come in ready to fight for positions. The coaches at Florida were telling me that quarterback and D-line are the biggest keys to success in the SEC. They are telling me and making me feel like a big-time priority and going after me like they need me. The old staff didn’t do that even though they were saying the things.”
Going forward, Lamar notes he is likely finished with official visits with just one week left until the ‘Contact Period’ ends. However, there is a chance he makes a quick unofficial visit this coming weekend.
“I am going to probably visit Florida State this weekend on Saturday for an unofficial visit,” Lamar said. “Coach Willie [Taggart] and a bunch of other coaches from Florida state were by today [Monday] and they are just telling me to come fight for a spot and FSU is the best place for me”
When it comes to deciding his future school, fans and college coaches will have to wait until National Signing Day on February 7. Lamar says he will decide between Florida and Florida State, and is giving no one team the edge heading into that timeline.
When picking there are several factors he’s keeping in mind.
“Really playing time, I need to do my research and figure out who is being real with what they say and who really needs me and who has the best shot to play. Just things that have the best things for me to be successful and the best atmosphere.”
The 247Sports Composite, an industry generated average, currently ranks Lamar as the Nation’s No. 222 overall prospect in the 2018 recruiting class.
