I maintain that everything that the players could do during a boycott they can do while playing outside of physically protesting themselves. either way, I still havent really seen concrete plan/goals. I would hope some of that is being discussed amongst the players now.
I understand people who think that boycotting would make a grand statement. however I think that boycotting now wouldnt be clearly seen as a social statement. By that I mean that amongst the public at large many would perceive the reason for the stoppage to be just as much if not more about covid than anything else. of course the boycotts branding would be improved by continued messaging from the players. what I think would be the better course of action would be to finish this season. when they return make public their list of immediate demands of the NBA with a deadline of Oct 1, which I think is approx when training camps typically open. If said changes/demands arent done at that point then boycott the upcoming season.
I think this serves multiple purposes. It reinserts the NBA into the forefront to increase players platforms which helps whatever aspect they individually decide to push, holds the NBA accountable as the demands would be very public and could be followed/observed by everyone, holds the players accountable, and would demonstrate successfully executed action that could be patterned after by other leagues/groups. If this scenario did lead to a boycott it would be more clearly be about social issues having cut away at least some of the covid noise.
