What’s the quickest path to the money? Web dev or Java? I just want to make $900 extra to move out.

https://www.freecodecamp.org/learn/

Do Responsive Web Design, Javascript, then Front end libraries certification.

Make some full fledged projects for your portfolio

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=beginner+web+dev+projects

Find a Front End dev job.

9-12 months on average

Or build some Wix sites to sell to people, I dunno :wow:

Then learn to Google instead of having me do your home work :beli:

Any brehs in San Diego?

I have a couple offers on the table, 1 in SD and 1 in VA. This is my first official role outside of “Sys admin” type jobs. I’m using it as a stepping stone to better roles. I don’t have a degree.

With that being said is ~95k plus benefits and education assistance worth it in SD or would ~70k in VA be better? SD company is a well known firm and has the better sounding title(Cloud infrastructure engineer) while the VA job title could be better(Aws sys admin). Both are in the cleared dod space working for the Navy. Only reason this is even a question is because I did the paycheck calculator and the SD role only comes out to about $500 a check more take home after those wild California taxes. Looking at zillow in California is spooky shyt. I just don’t want to be struggling or barely scraping by anymore.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I almost cursed my manager out brehs :francis:.This year I really worked to become a better developer. I took on harder stories and got shyt done.

Had my end of year discussion / bonus discussion with this man and he said even though I've grown a lot as a developer and showed great results he said I asked too many questions? How tf am I supposed to grow without asking my lead questions? Even got bumped down a tier so I don't get the max bonus now....Mannnnn I'm leaving this damn company :francis:

Kind of depends. Someone from my team just got the boot because they were asking too many questions. I mean she was literally asking the same type of questions over and over and never "Learned" from the answers. My lead informed me you have to ask your questions in the right way so people don't think you are looking for someone else to do your work. He would say " Hey I tried X and X. and this is my result" etc. I mean she would send emails with paragraphs asking what is this and what is that. 2 weeks later. Asking the same exact questions all over again.

Not saying this is you. But just throwing this out here for other brehs since I recently seen this myself.

For those who in all stages of their careers, whether starting out or well- seasoned I suggest you do yourself a favor and sign up for a clubhouse account. Many tech professionals on there networking like crazy, and providing so much useful information (imagine the Coli in audio form), and also providing opportunities. I highly suggest it. Just make sure to follow people and clubs that are not about nonsense.

Anyone ever take a job making less for more involvement / interesting work? Where I’m at now is a big company, but I barely get to do any actual development just a bunch of random task ( request, working on breaks, writing stories, sitting in meetings helping with deployments etc.) basically I don’t feel like I’m learning or doing much. I feel like I’m kind of trapped because the pay for my area is really good and I know how difficult the job market is now. I have been recently looking at possibly transferring over to another company where I know I would get better training/mentoring and get to do more coding and less bytch work. Only issue is the pay is lower. It’s livable, but I’d have less disposable income and money to save.

Soon as you are able to create a profile search for this club, and follow: " Black in Tech".

They have weekly official club meetings every Tuesday at 6 pm EST. But once you are following that club any official member who creates a room under that club's disguise you will be notified of it in case you would like to join in on the chat (Rooms can be about various topics).

(FYI - Following the club does not make you a member automatically, so do not worry about people creating spammy rooms, etc)

Advice: Follow Moderators within these rooms who are about their business. You will be notified about their rooms once you do.

I hope that's a bit more clear, there's a slight learning curve for this app.

If you don't have a friend who has an extra invite to send you (Invites are limited), just Download, and reserve your username. Soon as you do you will be waitlisted.

But if you have a contact who is already an existing Clubhouse user, they can "nominate" you and push you through. I was able to gain access the same day I registered.

Any Web Developers in here?

I get out of the Air Force at the end of next year. Plan on finishing my degree in MIS when I get and then doing a coding Bootcamp. Both using my GI Bill. As of right now I am focused on finishing as much of my degree as I can while I am still in so I don't have to use much of my GI bill on the outside. I know the most important thing is to have is projects under your belt which I am seriously lacking but I also constantly hear that a degree opens much more doors for you starting out. I do plan on learning starting The Odin Project soon but as of right now my classes are a priority.

Just need to know if yall can give me any advice as a black male pursuing this field and if I can pick yall brain on anything.

I second that. fukk a boot camp, the CS degree is more valuable. If anything, finish that MIS degree and get a Master's in CS, it'll open more doors.

That was originally the plan but I read that CS degree would be a bit overkill for a Web Development. Also the amount of month in a MIS vs a CS degree is a lot less. Math has been kicking my ass most of my life but if its really worth it to get that CS degree I will push through.
