My school was forced closed by the national government for being the "worst in the country" and from there I ended up at the best unis in this country. I am less sheltered than you.

Problem solving IS key, and you (as an advisor, no less), not understanding that IS part of the problem.

excuse on :hubie:

let the madness play on, play on, play on ... alright all, all right:wow:

This post is why I said you're sheltered. You think just cause YOU managed to get out of your situation, then the rest are just lazy and not willing in comparison. Thats being sheltered because you are only able to see the world via your own angle. Sad :francis:

I come from an impoverished background so these things you speak of aint new to me. I beat ALL odds....but to this day I know enough not to marginalized others' struggles because I was lucky enough to be equipped with the right tools to escape that death grip of my environment. Hell to this day I still feel the effects of my upbringing.

But like you said, play on.

@Obreh Winfrey how are ukrainian/russian software devs viewed in the industry in america? I have a few that i'm thinking of contracting out

@kevm3
I can't say for certain. I've only knowingly worked with 3 dudes from that region, 2 older, the other maybe late 30s to early 40s. The older guys were capable dudes, very intelligent :yeshrug:. The younger was more of an architect, had a habit of taking on too much, but good enough. I never had the knowledge problems with them like I've dealt with for the Indian contractors, and I hate to stereotype like that because I've worked with a few ones.

Just joined a new team, same company. It's that drowning feeling all over again but I think I'm picking things up quickly after having gone through it before. The lack of documentation and people familiar with the application are frustrating. My other team, I had several people able to give me an overview of the application architecture, and at least how it worked from their view of the world. This one it's basically been pulling teeth to see what people are doing.

That said, there's potentially good experience to be had here. It'll keep me placated for a little while.

If you have two years of exp, you should be able to get that next job. Are you actually getting interviews? It could be the interview process that is holding you back.

Yeah im getting a bunch of phone interviews especially from recruiters who don't even take the time to see if you would actually fit for the job they want to place u in. Then a few video interviews. It usually stops there for me or after the coding challenge. I've even had companies ghost me before the video interview after it was scheduled. :francis:

Like right now my biggest lead on a job is ecommerce with angular and php :francis: my background is shopify + vue and I really know react well. I know some php but I just started trying angular after they told me thats their stack. I have a hackerrank test due in a week so I'm trying to learn this shyt asap + do algos everyday before the test using javascript.

Idk this shyt is frustrating. But on the bright side, at least if I fail I'd learn angular and can put it on my resume :russ:

Yeah, these companies are flooded with new guys trying to break in the industry, so they can create all kinds of unreasonable requirements and even be unprofessional with ghosting candidates and all. Getting that first job is just a game of perseverance and knowing how to interview correctly. You have to accept you're going through tons of interviews to get that first job. If I were you, I'd pick either React or Angular and focusing on deep diving with that and then deploy sites with one of those two since they are a bit more popular than Vue. I'd put DS and algos in the background. Some interviewers will ask you stuff about that, but a lot of companies don't and to me, it is be better to be competent at the stack they are using on a day to day basis than have a ton of general computer science knowledge at least initially. Once you master your stack, you can pick up DS and algos, but given the limited time, you want to show these guys you can hit the ground running with their stack.

Oh yea I'm past that first job and ive done a super deep dive into React over last year or so. I mainly use shopify at my current job now. I think thats the problem they see shopify and dont believe I am good with react or js even though i have to use vanilla js at my job... so its almost like trying to get a first job again. But i have some projects with react/nextjs on my portfolio. Also the only reason I do the codewars/leetcode stuff is because almost every job ive tried says i need to do an algo test..

Idk last month i applied to 5 jobs a day. this month im going to 15 jobs a day. Just going keep pushing and making things to put on my portfolio.

I also started freelancing we'll see how that goes

Bought LeetCode premium so I could have access to the explanations. Didn't want to flounder around looking for solutions I just wasn't going to formulate on my own. Like when the solution is more based in mathematics than computer science, I have little patience for that. Or when my logic is close but not quite there and I'm starting to get demoralized, being able to see that solution is a breath of fresh air. Right now I'm only doing Easy problems centered around Arrays, but I've gotten a few confidence boosters under my belt. On the other hand, there are some problems so poorly worded that it's not even worth trying. I just need to maintain momentum. Resume needs a refresh and then time to start blasting companies.
