Both tbh. Really tryna have something in my portfolio, but I think it can be pitched. Tbh I don’t feel like learning php for woo commerce. Shopify doesn’t have much multi vendor support.
I wouldn't waste my time tbh but if you feel your idea is solid of course go ahead, are you already in the industry or trying to get into it? if i were you i would just learn the most popular framework/language/tools whatever build something small and grind leetcode

Brehs, is it worth building a multi-vendor e-commerce type app from the ground up? :patrice:

Lets say it uses a MERN (MongoDB-Express-React-Node) stack, taking a microservices/event bus style approach (Kubernetes pods for multiple services)

Have a project in mind that I feel can be successful if done right, given the void in the market.

Will be the solo dev for the most part. Have time on my hands as I recently got laid off:skip:, and coupled with savings and unemployment checks, can afford 5/6 months of undistracted development time.

Using a project from a Udemy course with very similar scope as the base, but not sure if I'll be able to manage the complexity by myself when its time to wire up the react app with the backend. Also wondering if I'm reinventing the wheel, when shyt like Shopify exists.

I need seasoned brehs to set a nikka straight

If you are just in the market, I wouldn't bother trying to pitch my own project unless you just have some super unique idea that has never been done before. With commerce platforms where a lot of sensitive information is at risk, it's going to be hard to convince customers to switch over from something more established. You can work on the project, but don't work on it as something to pitch, but as you said, work on it as more of a portfolio project and as you get your next job and more years in the industry, work on that project on the side to make it production ready... but your main focus right now should be getting that next job.

Also, I would say significantly trim down the scope of that project into something that you can feasibly do. It's incredibly hard to do full stack and then dev ops on top of that. Keep your app as simple as possible and as easy to deploy as possible initially or else things will get so complex that you won't want to work on it.

I almost cursed my manager out brehs :francis:.This year I really worked to become a better developer. I took on harder stories and got shyt done.

Had my end of year discussion / bonus discussion with this man and he said even though I've grown a lot as a developer and showed great results he said I asked too many questions? How tf am I supposed to grow without asking my lead questions? Even got bumped down a tier so I don't get the max bonus now....Mannnnn I'm leaving this damn company :francis:

Great. More times than not, they have to knock you on your performance so they don't have to pay out those bonuses. Besides, the raise you'll get from jumping companies will vastly outweigh any raise you'll get from staying at the same company.

Any GitHub experts in here? I’m trying to set this up but still confused on uploading my code, dataset and finding a team to help me make improvements :patrice:.

It's going to be very hard to find a group that wants to code together. I started a coding group, but realistically, not many people stick around. If you are really dedicated I can send you the whats app group

SPIN: Your boss trying to tell you, you've outgrown this place. You asked the right questions and made a lot of people of uncomfortable. Either because they didn't know or because they felt their personal fiefdom was in danger. So instead of telling you that, he's forcing your hand and making you find a better place to be in.

I noticed that too. I'm decided for now to keep working on my own and apply for jobs during my downtime. I need to focus more on the job search at the moment since I ready for a change with my situation.

In the industry but as an software delivery consultant. Job wise, dealt mostly with SQL, command line and a bit of devops here and there. However I've been doing udemy courses web dev for a year plus now, if that counts for something. Not really tryna get a gig as dev, moreso devops/infra. Its a bit of passion project so i'm not terribly bothered that its directly in-line with devops

Sounds like a plan. I'll try my best and take it a day at a time. Will probably leverage as much boilerplate code as I can find and use frameworks like AWS Amplify to reduce any overhead

How long you been there? i always heard that software developers should be jumping ships after 2 years due to a bigger increase in salary.

What’s the quickest path to the money? Web dev or Java? I just want to make $900 extra to move out.
