So, some of you expect Obama to be MLK or Malcolm X but do you realize he is just as much of a symbolic figure as they were. The fact that a a man who is described as African American by this racist, bigoted society is the president of this country is something that I never thought I'd see and that most African Americans never thought they'd see. Why are so many of you trying to downlay the significance of this? I'm not speaking to the white posters on here because I know you can't realate but as a black man/woman, how could you shyt on Obama for what he has accomplished?Just curious to why you would ignore the history of this country and act like his election is no big deal.
You got any examples of people dismissing the symbolic significance of his election? Because I don't recall that ever being a bone of contention.
But just because his election is a wonderful symbolic achievement it doesn't mean that Obama becomes untouchable and that legit criticisms of his policies should be quelled. He's been elected twice already...blindly cheerleading is no longer necessary.

Obama did a lot for race relations and civil rights in this country, just by being elected/re-elected.

what people really need to realize is that civil rights is not an economic plan
History will remember Obama as a civil rights leader. One because the idea of civil rights is what paved the way for his election. And two because most of the issues he has addressed are civil rights. They may not be "black" civil rights. But they at civil rights nonetheless.
