I stait up quoted the constitution of the United States and you are still trying to argue. :snoop:

Section 2:

The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States, and the Electors in each State shall have the Qualifications requisite for Electors of the most numerous Branch of the State Legislature.

The constitution doesn't need to say, "representative democracy", if it functions just the same via the words "the People will elect their representatives to carry out their (our) will." That is, by definition, a representative democracy.

A Republic is a democracy. Yes we don't have a direct democracy, but we are a democracy. In Republicans minds when they tell you we aren't a democracy we are a Republic they mean we don't want the electoral college dissolved lol.

Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but I didn't know they were outright denying we were a Democracy.
It seems like yesterday, that George W. Bush was trying to spread democracy throughout the world.
“democracy,” when imported to the third world by way of the gun, means subservience to american rule and access to resources - material and human - for capitalist exploitation.

I don't necessarily disagree. It's more just the huge turn from Reagan (who Republicans used to worship prior to Trump) and George W. Bush pushing Democracy as this great American component that the rest of the world should embrace to now Republicans saying that America isn't even a Democracy.

No you didn't. You made an assumption just so you could run interference for some deluded Trump sycophants. Go and watch the video.

A constitutional federal republic is a representative democracy. We're just not a direct democracy.
Even this is simplifying the structure of the U.S. government and laws.

We are a representative democracy when it comes to electing our executives and representatives at the federal level, but we have plenty of direct democracy in action as well, particularly when it comes to ballot measures, circuit court justices, and state constitutional amendments. Many of those are majority rules direct democracy and is constitutionally protected. There are states where citizens can even overturn laws passed by the legislative via direct democracy voting. Every time you fill out a ballot during an election year, you're going to be doing some direct democracy.

But yeah, if I never have to hear "wE aInT nO dEmOcRaCy, wE a RePuBliC" unironically again I'll count it a blessing.

It's crazy how it's almost always the same people trying to deflect away from the actual subject in these threads, and for what? We're talking about a group of people who still believe the 2020 election was stolen and are trying to distort reality to justify authoritarian rule, not any of the other things being talked about.

Edit: talking about @I Really Mean It @ORDER_66

I totally remember this line of thinking too. The line of thinking among Republican voters during the "war on terrorism" was that they civilize iraqis by giving them a democratic government.

That said, I think the "we're a Republic not a democracy" talking point from the last 8 years is a cope for them to deal with the fact that they have only won the popular vote once in the last 32 years.

Yes, you quoted the constitution and yes: The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government - but you are not including that this Republic Form of Government is democratically elected.
We dont elect the president democratically. You are conflating the idea of 1 person 1 vote, with democracy.

We are democracy lite. We have a constitution with rights that can't just be taken away by the majority. You don't get to vote on the actual laws. (Which is true democracy.)

You democratically elected someone to represent you. That person makes the laws regardless of what your opinion is.

@Tasha And already addressed this, so I will leave their response below.

Yall nikkas literally arguing semantics as facts :mjlol:

Both are used interchangeably but don't refer to the exact same thing by definition

"Because democracy is an abstract name for a system and republic is the more concrete result of that system, democracy is frequently used when the emphasis is on the system itself. We could say that democracy is to republic as monarchy is to kingdom.

These terms are not mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, a document that nevertheless expresses clearly that governments should be established “deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” This reads like a definition of both democracy and republic. In Article IV Section IV of the Constitution, the term republican is used as an adjective: “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government.”
