What's stupid about it? Some of the greatest career defining runs were on busted plays, where going by your logic, the rusher should have ran forward and gotten tackled, instead they ran east and west as an improvisation to running where they are supposed to run. This obvious takes more use of skillset to see holes in the defense since the play is no longer going as planned and the runners are mostly on their own. How can you say having defenses chase you all over the field in vain falling all over themselves not dominating?
these are three of the most iconic runs in NFL history. Where are these three going backwards, east-west, or whatever else.
Its stupid as fukk because running backs go forward, not backwards.
What takes skill is seeing here a hole is and hitting it. Being able to stop on a dime to cut back to where the hole is. Being able to break tackles. Being able to break long runs is a skill. Being able to make moves in the open field to avoid defensive backs is a skill. Having balance so you dont fall over yourself while running is a skill. Being able to fit yourself into small creases in the line to gain yards is a skill.
Running backwards and side to side is not something you want in your running back and its a good way to end up out the league. Its not a skillset. And if you faster than everyone, why run backwards?
