just because she plays guitar piano and can sing, they keep trying to put her in this prodigy category with the likes of Prince, Stevie Wonder, and on the lower end Alicia Keys. She's none of these people because she used her mysteriousness as a gimmick and then when she actually revealed herself, she had zero charisma or star quality.

she has musical skill with no it factor. most of her actual "success" is machine generated and without it there is nothing to validate it from the people. this is "the push" gone wrong vol 26

the industry thought they could just incubate another legend. wrong.

Like a couple of previous comments I've just read, if this was dropped earlier, it probably would've sold a bit more.

Sex sells. Sure, her music sounds great but she doesn't push toxic thot behavior. (Sza, Summer Walker etc.)
That's what resonates.

And that’s a good thing. She’s something different and she ain’t a try hard :yeshrug: I thought that’s what the Coli clamors for all the time in the current R&B game, originality, going back to basics, and all that.

Ella Mai doing fine without that. SZA just had an acoustic smash hit that isn’t about sex. This is perhaps one of the best times ever to be a black female artist. Nothing to do with thot music.

I’d argue it’s more to do with her not having white fans. White girls fukk with SZA, Summer Walker, Jhene Aiko, Ella Mai, etc. All these chicks have heavy social media presence, personality, and relationships. HER doesn’t have any of that. She reminds me of EP-era Tinashe. Can’t connect with people for whatever reason. Too mysterious. It worked during the SoundCloud era when she was building buzz but it’s not translating to larger audiences.

Now that is a fair assessment.

She was a child prodigy, long before she was 13 she'd already appeared on every major morning show. Perhaps she's a plant, but are you saying that every kid who gets recognition is a plant or do you actually have more evidence than that?

By his definition that would mean Beyoncé is a plant too :mjlol:

Or every single one of the Jacksons :mjlol:

she's not a plant.... otherwise she wouldn't be with RCA, of all labels.

Here's the real problem: up until now, she's been releasing these 5-7 song EPs. The EPs only really work if you got a true smash or cult classic song. Did any of those EPs have songs like that? Nope. Yes, her first compilation got a grammy, but I'm sure Clive Davis pulled some strings.

The irony is that her mentor is Alicia Keys, one of the queens of RCA, yet you'd have hoped they'd have a duet on the debut too. But nope. I do wonder how not being able to perform live and create buzz at venues hampered HER's buzz at least for the debut album. It probably would have made a difference.

With that said, I have no clue how long this RCA contract is. But I think she needs a new team around her and probably a fresh set of producers to work with. Funny enough, most people will probably recognize HER for appearing on Khaled's We Goin Crazy joint.... the same song which you hear during the NBA Playoffs ad-nauseum. Speaking of Khaled, all it shows is how important that Roc Nation plug was in securing a deal with ESPN to play all his songs ad nauseum. His album can be (and probably was) awful, but he and Roc Nation accomplished their main goal and now have no incentive to actually make a great album.

Maybe HER would thrive with the Roc Nation plug, who knows......

I wouldn’t necessarily say that considering the numerous occasions I’ve heard “Could’ve Been” and “Focus” getting play when I’m out and about. Granted, they’re singles but what single in music doesn’t end up being a classic or cult classic?
