Ella Mai doing fine without that. SZA just had an acoustic smash hit that isn’t about sex. This is perhaps one of the best times ever to be a black female artist. Nothing to do with thot music.

I’d argue it’s more to do with her not having white fans. White girls fukk with SZA, Summer Walker, Jhene Aiko, Ella Mai, etc. All these chicks have heavy social media presence, personality, and relationships. HER doesn’t have any of that. She reminds me of EP-era Tinashe. Can’t connect with people for whatever reason. Too mysterious. It worked during the SoundCloud era when she was building buzz but it’s not translating to larger audiences.

This is what I was thinking too. H.E.R is talented as a musician but her records are very bland, borderline boring and she tries to rehash R&B that’s been done before and better than anything she’s done… No one tryna hear Alicia Keys type beat in 2021

Not a huge fan of Summer walker or Ella Mae but I’ve listened to SZA music extensively since her first mixtape and she’s grown as an artist every release and takes the craft of songwriting EXTREMELY serious and it shows in her records. Shes willing to take risks in her subject matter and women relate to it. It’s actually authentic and she creates an atmospheric vibe. She’s not the greatest singer but you can tell she has a vision with her records that she executes with her team extremely well. That goes from the way the harmonic voicing in her melodies, to the beats/samples she uses and the way her records are mixed.

HER music sound almost factory generated… like it’s trying to tick certain boxes. Overproduced. At least this new album anyway. She don’t have records like this….
