I live in urban/suburban area. Guess what--I used to grow food in my backyard.

It is possible. Get the government/law out of our business, and get going. We used to trade food with our neighbors.
The possibilities are endless.

What's misguided is thinking that the government can solve our problems.

You could not grow enough food to sustain yourself or your neighbors in limited back yard space. As soon as you did start growing enough to feed the community the goverment will step in and Inforce their regulations on you. It is literaly illegal to "get the goverment out of our business"

One of many reasons why I question our allegiance to the Democratic Party. They want to stifle our black enterprise/self-sufficiency and keep us dependent on scraps--welfare. The sad part is that most blacks don't even realize it.

I am expecting massive cuts to SNAP to proposed and most of them to be met with bipartisan agreement when the next round of budget talks come up in the new year.
Austerity is the new black, folks. Especially with 2014 being an election year...the people up for re-election are going to try and show that they are serious about trimming the cost of government even though most of their measures will be hardly a drop in the bucket when it comes to government overspending.

Maybe, with most welfare programs you have to provide proof of income before you can meet requirements.

The current welfare system is designed for people to be dependent not independent.

We need to move to a merit based system where people provide some sort of a service to state for being "parasites."

Remember I'm not here bashing people who have lost their job or are sick and can't work.
I'm talking about generations on welfare....I have a distant cousin whose whole family have been on the system forever. Those are the people I have issue with.

Not the family seeking help for a few years to get by because of an unforeseen tragedy

To be fair letting the banks fail would have been disastrous for the poor, more so than many realize.

That said the bailouts were a horrible idea.
