I have to agree. Warren G did save Def Jam at the time, and it's been documented by people that were running Def Jam at the time Warren did his thing.

Redman is in my top 5 all time but the idea that his gold selling albums saved def jam is ridiculous. Back then going gold was just okay. If you think about it selling 500,000 x $10 = $5 million dollars then you have to subtract recording and marketing expenses and after that your not left with that much. Back them labels spent a lot on marketing. Not saying Redman wasn't profitable for them but his albums weren't the ones that kept them from going under

This is going to be my last post on this, and im not denying anything that's been said in this post, but Lyor Cohen who used to be the head of Def Jam once said that Redman's debut album saved Def Jam from going completely under in the early 90s.

I'm not dissing warren G. I'm only quoting the XXL interview with Russel Simmons, Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles.

They all said Redman saved Def Jam.

Im not going to get on you for not being able to find the quote but it is written in Russell Simmons book. No need to even debate how a gold album kept Def Jam alive vs a triple platinum album and 3 top 10 singles when people were buying singles.

Albums helping pay the bills or lights is not quite the same as helping the business get a new distribution deal.....

This dumb motherfuker done ignored all logic and evdence

How old were you when regulate dropped?

You morons are the ones changing goal posts, what redman did for def jam in the early 90s is irrelevant

Its very a simple fact:

In 94 Def Jam was in the red, bleeding money until Warren G sold 5 million records, resuting in a massive infusion of capital and a new distribution deal

Hence Warren G saved Def Jam

Without Warren G, east coast rap as we know it would have unfolded totally different. Crazy.

Actually not really. Def Jam was about to fold but they got a deal before Warren album came out. Once Warren album came out it brought much needed revenue at that time but they already got their deal they wouldn't of folded. Also As successful as Warren G was in 94. Biggie came and crushed the building as well as Bad Boy from that year on. After "Ready To Die" Warren G completely fell off. But his album did save Def Jam at the time cause New York rappers weren't going Platinum. LL Cool J was the last Platinum album on Def Jam and for a New York Emcee until Biggie came. Also a lot of people forget Warren actually produced the entire LP including "Regulate", dude was pretty dope behind the boards.

But sadly his smooth laid back flow couldn't compete with the new Hard Core NY sound starting to take over at that time. "Regulate" was huge but after that again he fell of. Matter of fact his 2nd LP dropped on the same day as "Life After Death". Most people don't even remember all the albums Warren dropped after his 1st LP.

Also the album actually came out on Def Jam/Violator. So Chris Lighty was the executive producer. Suge was so pissed at Warren cause at the time Dre was getting ready to leave and Snoop sales were starting to drop and Bad Boy was taking off. Suge was in a tight spot and Warren could of saved Death Row before Pac did. But Dre warned him and thus Warren went all the way to the East Coast to release his album. So Yes "Regulate" did save Def Jam but the East Coast was still going to blow in the mid-90's mostly cause of Bad Boy and Biggie. What the Warren situation does show is how Biggie brought the East Back. The West had Dre in 92, Snoop in 93 and Warren in 94 as far as commercial success. Biggie was the 1st East Coast dude to really sell during that era when the West was on fire.
