We can see our enemies just as clearly actually more clearly because technology and age of communication allows it but I think I understand what you mean.
That's why we have some amazing documentaries, some that have been posted in this thread showing the horror and grand spectacle that it was maybe in a more truthful light then we would with the way the internet works and how distorted everything gets.
also Japan attacking Pearl Harbor was also a big fukk up.

Low key, a war between the US and Japan was likely to happen no matter what, thanks to Japan’s war with China.
Basically, Japan needed the resources from Southeast Asia to continue their war in China. It became even more critical once the US (and the UK and the Dutch) hit them with embargoes on various war materials, including steel and oil, in protest of that same war with China. The problem of course was Southeast Asia was carved up between various European powers at the time. Since those same countries were pre-occupied with the war in Europe, Japan figured “fukk it, we’ll just take it”.
The glaring problem with this plan however was the US could easily cut off Southeast Asia from Japan because of our presence in the Philippines (a US territory at the time). So Japan figures “fukk it, we'll have to deal with the US eventually, let’s deal with them now”. So immediately after Pearl Harbor, they simultaneously attack Hong Kong, Malaya, Singapore, the Philippines, Guam, and Wake Island.
So why not just end the war with China and negotiate with the western powers? Because there was a good chance a civil war would’ve broken out in Japan if they withdrew from China. The Japanese military basically controlled the civilian government since the early 1930s, when radical military officers assassinated the prime minister and initiated a coup to (unsuccessfully) depose his successor a few years later.
For Japan, thanks to their internal politics and earlier militarism, their choices were either a civil war or a world war. And they said “fukk it, we’ll take the world war”
