Had this happen to me, but with my system. I turned it on, and the moment it reached the main menu selection it froze and shut off.

Turns out I just needed to update the system so luckily one day I managed to hurry to the update screen and put it on rest mode to update it. It never froze/shut off on me again.

OP check to see if all things are updated. Check all games, system softwares, etc.

Or heck, try and install a different hard drive and see if that is the problem. If you have PS+ then upload your gamesaves to their cloud first
I don't know how to install a different hard drive...is it difficult?

your best bet is to sell it on craigslist and hope someone is dumb enough to meet you somewhere without testing it

cover your license plates

Sending it to Sony, they gonna hit you for about the same price as a used one could be had for. You could look for repairs on Craigslist. Usually inexpensive.

If you wanna trade it in, every store is different so nobody here can tell you how its gonna go for sure. Typically in a gamestop they will turn it on. You can also bet on them putting a game in to see if it loads up. In most cases I don't then seeing the cashier pressing start.

With that said, it can happen, and I'd bet on it happening if the wrong cashier was working that day. Maybe you might have to scope multiple stores, you should easily be able to find your "mark"

Bestbuy will less likely press play at the start screen, the cashier situation is a little trickier tho because they often call over a specialist who will still not care 50%of the time from my experience. I recently returned a day one Xbox controller, no questions asked :win:
