At first it wasn't like that. When he first came down to NC he did an album in a few days with 9th Wonder, Khrysis, and Illmind on production. Then he did that Cloud 9 thing with 9th Wonder. Around The Salvation and Live From the Tape Deck IMO is when his lyrics really started getting super coded and harder to follow. I have a hard time understanding a lot of what he means now, and The Salvation took me a lot of listens to pick up on most of it.
Here are some older more straightforward joints of his (about 10 years ago) for reference:

but at the same he has like the same writing cliches in all his raps (always saying "from the jump" and variations of it, always "bringing it back" in the rhyme to force a double meaning, i.e. "if it is what it is then it was what it was", hooks always say the title again and again, and saying stuff like "get it?" when no one gets it )
