I don't think it can be fixed. The world is changing and America was destined to retreat from the world at some point. I think the next Democratic president will probably maintain an "America first" type of foreign policy but be less belligerent about it. Its clear that the tragectory of the world is one in which there are 3 major powers (blocs) - America, Russia and China.
