Should a person making food at McDonalds be able to afford rent and groceries with their paycheck?

If you think McDonald's workers don't deserve a livable wage because they're 'unskilled,' then you are admitting that you think people need to be 'skilled' in order to barely make ends meet.
Well, you should.

What have you been doing your entire life where you couldn’t take some time out of your obviously free schedule to develop a skill?

Libraries have free internet and YouTube is loaded with free videos on learning whatever you want to learn.

Outside of a severe mental illness, there is no excuse to be unskilled in a nation where it’s against the law to not go to school, and power is provided 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

European McDonalds have almost the same prices on the menu as the American ones, and they pay significantly higher over there.

No, a Big Mac or 20 piece McNuggets aint gonna cost you $20 in order for workers to make a livable wage where they can get shelter and food.

In Denmark for example the pay over $20 an hour for McDonalds workers, and the cost of living is similar to Charlotte, NC.

The taxes are much higher, but they have free healthcare, college, childcare, etc.

In a city with high residency demands that bring in costly social services on tax payers that cause high taxes on tax payers and then create high rent and property values. I don't think so.

Affordable government housing is all they get. Or stay with family until you level up.

No we need to incentivize and push people to get back into trades before this country's skilled trade labor shortage becomes a crisis.

Federal minimum wage should be adjusted to the average cost of living across all states. The states can then adjust the mw if the cost to live there is higher than the national average to meet the requirements.

The poverty line numbers are foolishness but the actual cost of living in the US is roughly $40,000 per year.

Average full time worker spends 2,000 hours working per year so federal minimum wage should $20/hr.

Any adult working a full time job should be able to cover the costs of living regardless of what they do.

If an employer feels the role & set of tasks is important enough to dedicate a person to the job, they have the responsibility to pay that person the necessary wage so that they can live with dignity.

The arguments used against paying someone a living wage can always be used against middle management and administration

The wealthy have done a NUMBER on this country :wow:

Average person in America is making around $40K like you said, as a household they're making around $70K (two adults together)

The average house price is $350K

HTF can the average person afford the average house :dead:

If your argument is that they need to gain skills only to still struggle at the end of the month, then what is even the incentive for them to do so?

I don't think employers should have to shoulder the burden of an extremely high cost of living.

This is one of those topics that's a part of a larger issue.

You can't have a NATIONWIDE minimum wage when COST OF LIVING varies state to state, town to town, city to city.

15 dollars to flip burgers in New York is entirely different than flipping burgers in Oklahoma.

There's a federal minimum wage and state minimum wage. That problem has long been solved.

So you can at least struggle at the end of the month.

It can always be worse.

Mickey D’s is meant for teenagers, not grown adults to take care of a family with.
For all you people that parrot the "McDonald's jobs are for teenagers" shyt, you do realize that these restaurants don't wait till school let's out to open right?

The idea that teenagers working part time are holding up the entire workload of these restaurants is hilarious

When I worked McDs and Taco Bell, I was one of the few teens working there.

Most of the workers were adults with kids.

The same people take care of bartenders and servers with tips will balk at giving fast food workers a living wage. I don’t get it. Truth is, I worked harder at McDonalds than probably all my corporate jobs. It was a physically hard work (try washing dishes and mopping greasy ass floors for two hours.) It was also very emotionally taxing especially during peak hours.
