Damn. Shock G and the Digital Underground was one of the stalwarts of my youth and he always preached positivity and individuality.

Shock was one the most underrated contributors to the artform in terms of producing impact, really he was the one the started the packpack movement in the West Coast ushering people like Del, the Freestyle Fellowship and so on being an influence all the way down to rappers like Lil B Tyler and crew.

Was just about to post this....Shock was crazy on the keys too...i still remember when Shock told the story of how I Get Around came about. When it was time to do Pac's second album he was mad at Shock cause he kept giving rebelish type beats and Pac was like why the hell u keep giving me these types of beat. Shock said cause u the revolutionary. Pac was like naw gimmie something like Kiss You Back thus he created I Get Around.... RIP to the legend who will forever put the on the panties

I don’t disagree at all that Shock played a big role, DU opened the doors for a lot of ppl Luniz, Saafir, Mystic, Whoridas..the list goes on, Pac by far had the greatest success out of anybody who got in the industry via the Underground Railroad, I just think that his (Shocks) contribution to that legacy stands tall on its own without re-writing what it really was. The other cats Pac started with in the Bay were coming out nationally in 91/92 as well so Pac was coming through those doors regardless, DU happened to be the ones who opened the doors though.
In the beginning, Shock treated Pac like the typical new artist to an established artist.

I say Shock gave Pac the 'ok', yet early on didn't even really deal with Pac.

It was actually another artist in the group who took Pac under his wing, and it wasn't Shock.

It was inevitable that he'd blow, but I think Shock was a huge reason that he (Pac) is as revered as he is today.
Personally Pac would had remained militant if it wasnt for DU and he would had fizzled out as the last of the revolutionary rappers along with PE, Paris, KRS etc..

Before being introduced and while with DU, Pac early music was story telling and militant minded.

One of the reasons Pac asked Shock for a commercial single, he was starting to figure out that mainstream industry sales game.
