Jamestown was founded by English aristocrats who brought the Church of England over to America. So the Episcopal Church (renamed from the Church of England after the Revolutionary War) was always viewed as the church for the east coast white anglo saxon elites. Almost all of the founding fathers and early presidents were Episcopalian which is why JFK was such a big deal because he was the first Roman Catholic elected as president.
