He can't just leave. He took the most massive L a dictator can take outside of actually getting deposed. He looks weak and is rightly paranoid that weakened dictators often get deposed soon enough.

He is trying to figure out how to get out of this while still looking strong, and there is no easy answer there. All the things that he might do (limited nuke strike in Ukraine, shell Kiev to rubble, etc.) will get him cut off economically by everyone, including China, and make him even more a target for being deposed.

He needs to get his forces in the south to take the land that connects Ukraine to the Azov so that he can go home credibly claiming that he took enough land and neutered Ukraine, so at the very least, he is playing for that. If he can get it before a peace deal, he can negotiate to keep it.
The only out he has that makes him look strong (at least temporarily) is to launch an all out nuclear war with the west.

I don't put it past him at this point...dude is clearly delusional and deranged, and surrounded by yes men who can't seemingly give him bad news.

The pragmatic way out is to take a huge L and take whatever they can get in terms of Ukraine in NATO and maybe recognition of Crimea....and then completely play it off like a W to his own people with the propaganda machine. It'd be humiliating but that at least preserves lives of many people. But is he interested in preserving lives? Who knows.

Please, Al-Assad gassed his own people in 2012 and the most he got was a couple of Tomahawks. It will take a tactical nuke to get the West to support military action. And even then it would have to be swift before the ICBMs get involved.

Either way, its Lose-Lose for Putin and a VERY dire situation for Earth in general.
They weren't white breh. Chemical weapons on white people is WW3.
