I think you don't get the grasp of the consequences if that happens. Biden has been clear and adamant that there would be no US boots in Ukraine, Europeans leadership has said the same for them. The only exception would obviously be a direct attack from Russia which shouldnt happen. But NATO is at the ready in neighbouring countries in that case as it should be. That's dissuasion aimed at Russia to keep them in check and not overstep.
Russia and NATO do not directly face each other, when one of them is in an active operation, the other supports the opp indirectly (see Syria or Afghanistan for the most recent cases). That's just how it is.
If a NATO national wants to be a mercenary/legionary and go fight in Ukraine, that would be on him and him alone. His death will trigger no military response from NATO.
