I wouldn't be surprised if the US baited Russia into the whole Ukraine situation in a way. Putin was always going to attack Ukraine. He's been attacking Ukraine since 2014. But Biden basically gave him enough rope to hang himself. Let him make his move and then outmanuevered him every step of the way.

This was always the goal. We didn't know how we were going to get here but it was always known that Putin's position as Russian president was untenable the moment he decided to invade Ukraine for no reason.

He was always going to have to flee Moscow at some point. We didn't know when or even how, but this was always going to happen.
