Russia has close ties with Iran. Russia has thrown its bet on the Iranians. Iran is gonna buy a shyt ton of advanced Russian and Chinese weapons. Iran is large country with a powerful military and the potential to be the regional power like Turkey or Israel. My best bet Russia wants to use iran and its proxies to destablize mideast countries like Saudi Arabia for example. Remember Saudi Arabia has an oppressed sizable shia population that Iran is looking to liberate to ultimately destroy Saudi Arabia. Russia hasnt forgotten what Saudi Arabia did in Chechnya in the 90s. There was alot of Saudi foreign fighters who went into Chechnya for jihad and they had alot of support from "Islamic charities" who were being funded by wealthy Saudis even some from the govt. So the Russians blame them for instigating the invasion of Dagestan which led to the second Chechen war in which brutally crushed the chechen rebels and their jihadist allies. Also the Saudis backed the Afghan rebels and sent Saudi foreign fighters(OBL) to fight the Soviet Union. So they hate them.
Russia has ties with Egypt is also gonna use this to isolate Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has been using Egypt like it is its bytch since the revolution in 2011. The Egyptian govt actually supports Assad and sees what the Saudis is doing by supporting jihadist rebels. Also they told Saudi Arabia that they aint sending ground troops in Yemen because they knew any ground wa rin Yemen would be a quagmire. So with Egypt and Saudi Arabia's relationship getting strained Russia sees an opportunity. At the end of the day Russia sees Saudi Arabia for what it is and will use Iran as the vehicle to destroy them. With Saudi Arabia in chaos that means higher gas prices fro both Russia and iran and they take out their age old enemy. And we are stuck backing Saudi Arabia.
Which is why America needs to dump their asses and get closer with Iran.

The sunni world isnt unified. Alot sunnis hate Saudi Arabia and the Gulf sheikhs. They are not natural leaders to lead the Muslim world. A sunni in Egypt has nothing in common with a sunni in Yemen or Syria or even Turkey. Turkey is the natural leade rof the sunni world but they arent arab. Same with Pakistan. The shiites are unified because the whole religion is based on having a siege mentality. Also they have been oppressed everywhere in the muslim world. Yemen,Saudi Arabia,Kuwait,Pakistan,Iraq ,Bahrain etc. So they all gravitate to Iran. Now that is not to say they will do Iran's bidding and would become a colony of iran. But they see iran as the leader of their religion. Minorities always have a siege mentality(except black people in America
) so they stick together with a "we are all we got" type thinking. Shiites are likely to unite than sunnis. The other problem backing Saudi Arabia is that it isnt a real nation. It was a nation founded by the British a 100 years ago. And it is a tribal society that is only united with oil money not loyalty. Iran on the other hand is a country that has been around for THOUSANDS of years. They are always gonna be stable. Plus I read somewhere that Iran only needs oil to $50 a barrel to break even and meanwhile Saudi Arabia needs oil to be $85 a barrel. Oil isnt going up any time soon because of shale oil and iran pumping more oil. So who will survive long when oil stays at $50? The saudis are not a stable or reliable ally to back.
