Best Qb they have had since Big Ben.

Can only be a positive and doesn't affect their finances
The positives around Russ is that you're basically getting him for free. Even if he sucks its not a big deal because your other QB's sucked too.... WITH THAT SAID. People aren't going to like this suggestion but if the Steelers can draft a guy.. Taking a look at Spencer rattler and drafting him if he's available in the later rounds might not be a bad idea imo

You get to hide him for a year and having russ there to mentor him, teach him how to study game tape, teach him how to prepare for games etc as a player who also was a later round draft pick himself isn't the worst idea.

*runs from the chat before my mentions get filled with people telling me I'm crazy*

Another option is trading down in this draft to see if you can get enough draft picks to possibly trade up next year and get Sanders

Let's just say, these are Ryan Tannehill's stats under Arthur Smith as OC:

Tannehill under Arthur smith in 2019:

  • 24 TDs
  • 6 int (career best)
  • 117.5 Passer Rating (career besr)
Tannehill under Smith in 2020:

  • 3,819 yards (2nd best in career)
  • 33 TDs (career best)
  • 7 INT
  • 106.5 passer rating (2nd best in career)

Those numbers had more to do with Travis Henry and AJ Brown than they did with Tanny imo. Just look at how much of a disaster Atlanta was at QB during his tenure. Game becomes a lot easier when you're facing nothing but 8 and 9 man boxes every fukking time you drop back and have AJ brown on the outside to abuse corners in single coverage.

You do know a lot of sports media are deep in bed with the agents and will push things on their behalf in order to get scoops and additional information that helps them do their jobs correct? We see it all the time with folks like Adam Schefter or Woj in the NBA

That kind of stuff doesn't just start out of thin air. There's typically someone or something pushing those kinds of stories, and it's either the teams themselves or the players agents.

With absolute pedestrian qb play from Pickett, abysmal play from Mitch and competent play from Mason we still managed to go 6-1 in the division and made the playoffs

Our offense under Pickett was usually doing NOTHING for 3 and a half quarters. Our defense would give us a chance and at the end of the game Pickett would FINALLY put together one drive and get us the dub

The whole year we kept being amazed that we kept beating the odds and STEELING wins. That’s what we did consistently and it is just not sustainable.

You can’t win in the playoffs like that and it showed. If we can string wins together despite Pickett we can do even better with Russ. Then when you add it we are getting him for a very good cost then this is a win win
This signing is giving yall off season hope. Y’all will be bottom 2 of the division. Y’all need injuries to other teams qb’s to even be competitive in the AFC North

Only thing I wonder about is Smith's offense is heavy on middle of the field passes which Russ struggles with. Maybe the players/environment result in him improving in that regard, maybe the offense shifts to include things Russ feels good about too. But that's the thing to watch.

+1

Arthur needs a mobile qb that can hit the middle. And they went and got Russ who can't make those passes and hasn’t really been mobile since he was in Seattle.

Horrible fit.

Don’t matter. We was third in the division last year. Still almost swept the division and made the playoffs. That’s with considerably worse qb play than Russ.

No matter how you slice it it’s a win for us. Russ cannot be worse than the combo of Kenny and Mitch. That’s a fact

Steelers do not need a top 5 qb to be effective. We just need a top 25 qb

Joe Burrow as good as he is has not dominated the Steelers. He has a 3-2 record vs us

Lamar has a 2-4 record against us

The Browns are the Browns. They get us every now and again but for the most part we beat them. AFC North football is ugly and the Steelers generally win those games

What is the end game for the Steelers here? They aren't winning a Super Bowl with Russ under center. They may be good enough to eke out a winning record next season. What's the point of going hovering around 8-9 wins and be a one and done in the postseason.

Does Tomlin really believe that the Russ he'd be getting (mediocre with flashes of brilliance) would really put the Steelers over the top?

It would make more sense to play Pickett/Rudolph and get a QB in 2025 with hopefully a top 5 pick.

Steelers have built up enough goodwill to suck for a season of two to secure their QB of the future.

Spencer seems like he’d fit there. Good choice. It’ll be interesting to see who they pick

Travis Henry's freakish ability is what gave Arthur Smith his credentials. Dude is ass at calling plays as shown in Atlanta. People refuse to call shyt like this out. Yes a great player can make bad coaching look decent to good.
